Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

| Category | Tools | Operations | |----------|-------|------------| | Posts | 4 | list, create, update, delete | | Upvoters | 2 | list, add | | Comments | 4 | list, create, update, delete | | Changelogs | 4 | list, create, update, delete | | Changelog Publishing | 2 | publish, unpublish | | Changelog Subscribers | 3 | list, add, remove | | Users | 4 | get, list, upsert, delete | | Custom Fields | 2 | list, get | | Conversations | 6 | list, get, create, update, delete, reply | | Help Center | 11 | help centers (list, get), collections (CRUD), articles (CRUD) | | Utility | 2 | resolve post slug, find similar posts |

Prerequisites

  • Node.js >= 18
  • A FeatureBase account
  • A FeatureBase API key (Settings > API in your FeatureBase dashboard)

Setup

Option A: npx (no clone needed)

npx @gkpacker/featurebase-mcp --api-key your_api_key_here

Option B: Clone and build

git clone https://github.com/gkpacker/featurebase-mcp.git
cd featurebase-mcp
npm install
npm run build

Get your API key

Go to your FeatureBase dashboard → SettingsAPI → copy your API key.

Configure your MCP client

Claude Code

claude mcp add featurebase-mcp \
  -e FEATUREBASE_API_KEY=your_api_key_here \
  -- npx -y @gkpacker/featurebase-mcp

To also enable slug resolution and similar posts (requires your org URL):

claude mcp add featurebase-mcp \
  -e FEATUREBASE_API_KEY=your_api_key_here \
  -e FEATUREBASE_ORG_URL=https://yourorg.featurebase.app \
  -- npx -y @gkpacker/featurebase-mcp

Claude Desktop

Add to your claude_desktop_config.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "featurebase": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@gkpacker/featurebase-mcp"],
      "env": {
        "FEATUREBASE_API_KEY": "your_api_key_here",
        "FEATUREBASE_ORG_URL": "https://yourorg.featurebase.app"
      }
    }
  }
}

Cursor / Windsurf / Other MCP clients

Follow your client's MCP server configuration docs. The server runs on stdio transport. The command is:

npx -y @gkpacker/featurebase-mcp

Environment variables:

| Variable | Required | Description | |----------|----------|-------------| | FEATUREBASE_API_KEY | Yes | Your FeatureBase API key | | FEATUREBASE_BASE_URL | No | API base URL (default: https://do.featurebase.app/v2) | | FEATUREBASE_ORG_URL | No | Your org URL (e.g. https://yourorg.featurebase.app). Required for resolve_post_slug and find_similar_posts. |

You can also pass these as CLI arguments: --api-key, --base-url, --org-url.

Usage examples

Once configured, you can ask your AI client things like:

  • "List my top 10 most upvoted feature requests"
  • "Create a changelog entry for the v2.1 release"
  • "Reply to the latest conversation in Portuguese"
  • "List all help center articles"
  • "Create a new help center article about getting started"
  • "Find posts similar to 'dark mode'"
  • "Show me all users who upvoted post X"
  • "Update the status of post X to 'In Progress'"

Field selection

List tools support a select parameter that filters response fields using json-mask syntax. This reduces token usage when you only need specific fields:

select: "id,title,upvotes,postStatus(name)"

Development

# Run in development mode (no build step)
npm run dev

# Build
npm run build

# Run the built server
npm start
