Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Vite plugin to import markdown files with support for front-matter

Readme

vite-plugin-markdown-import

A Vite plugin to simplify the importing of markdown files, with support for front-matter attributes. Uses front-matter under the hood for parsing markdown files.

This plugin does not transform the markdown content into JSX/React Elements, it simply returns a string of the markdown's body and an object with your front-matter attributes. You can use the markdown body string in a markdown renderer/formatter of your choice, like react-markdown.

Installation

# npm
npm install -D vite-plugin-markdown-import

# pnpm
pnpm add -D vite-plugin-markdown-import

# yarn
yarn add -D vite-plugin-markdown-import

Usage

Vite Config

File: vite.config.ts

import MarkdownPlugin from '@goodforyou/vite-plugin-markdown-import';

export default defineConfig({
	// other config...

	plugins: [
		// other plugins...
		MarkdownPlugin(),
	],
});

Files can then be imported in your vite application files, like so:

File: example.tsx

// you can use other markdown rendering libraries, this is an example
import Markdown from 'react-markdown';
import TestMarkdown from './test-markdown.md';

export default function TestComponent() {
	return (
		<div>
			<Markdown>{TestMarkdown.body}</Markdown>
		</div>
	);
}

Typescript Config

If you are using typescript, at this point markdown files would be imported as type any. To fix that, add the following to your vite-env.d.ts file:

File: src/vite-env.d.ts

// other references...

/// <reference types="@goodforyou/vite-plugin-markdown-import/client" />

At this point now, imported files will have the type MarkdownType which specifies an object of the following:

export interface MarkdownType {
	attributes: Record<string, unknown>;
	body: string;
}

If you want to type your attributes further, you can do so via extending MarkdownType like so:

import type { MarkdownType } from '@goodforyou/vite-plugin-markdown-import/client';

export interface ExtendedMarkdownType extends MarkdownType {
	attributes: {
		title: string;
		description: string;
	};
}

You can then reference or declare a module in your vite-env.d.ts that will type your given markdown file:

declare module 'path/to/folder/*.md' {
	const value: ExtendedMarkdownType;
	export default value;
}
