Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@gradyjasonng/see-stylesheet

v0.1.0

Published

A superset of the CSSStyleSheet interface with utility methods for programmatic stylesheet manipulation.

Readme

see-stylesheet

Minimal, zero-dependency wrapper for working with the CSSOM API.

SEEStyleSheet is a superset of the native CSSStyleSheet interface that exposes utility methods for programmatically manipulating stylesheets, especially useful for working with shadow DOM styles.

SEE is just CSS (see-ess-ess), with more steps.

Install

npm install @gradyjasonng/see-stylesheet

Requires CSSStyleSheet support (Chrome 73+, Firefox 101+, Safari 16.4+, Edge 79+).

Quick start

import { SEEStyleSheet } from '@gradyjasonng/see-stylesheet';

const sheet = new SEEStyleSheet({
  initialCss: `
    :host { display: block; }
    .title { color: red; }
  `,
});

// Merge in updated styles — matched rules are updated, unmatched are appended
sheet.mergeRules(`
  .title { color: blue; }
  .subtitle { font-size: 0.875rem; }
`);

API

SEEStyleSheet extends CSSStyleSheet, so it inherits its full interface including insertRule(), deleteRule(), replaceSync(), and cssRules. It adds the following:

new SEEStyleSheet(options?)

Accepts the same options as CSSStyleSheet, plus:

| Option | Type | Description | |---|---|---| | initialCss | string | CSS text to parse into the sheet on construction. Supports multiple rules. |

const sheet = new SEEStyleSheet({
  initialCss: `
    .foo { margin: 2px; }
    .bar { background-color: tomato; }
  `,
});

sheet.mergeRules(css)

Parses css into rules and merges each one into the sheet. Returns this for chaining.

Matching rules are updated in place — declarations are overwritten by the incoming values, and any declarations not present in the incoming rule are left unchanged. Unmatched rules are appended.

Merging is recursive: nested at-rules and CSS-nested style rules are walked and merged at every level.

const sheet = new SEEStyleSheet({
  initialCss: `
    .card { color: red; padding: 8px; }
    @media (max-width: 600px) { .card { padding: 4px; } }
  `,
});

sheet.mergeRules(`
  .card { color: blue; }
  @media (max-width: 600px) { .card { padding: 2px; } }
  .new-rule { display: grid; }
`);

// Result:
// .card { color: blue; padding: 8px; } — color overwritten, padding preserved
//   @media (max-width: 600px) { .card { padding: 2px; } }  — nested rule updated
//   .new-rule { display: grid; }                   — appended (no prior match)

Rules are matched by type and a stable identity key:

| Rule type | Identity key | |---|---| | CSSStyleRule | selectorText | | CSSMediaRule / CSSSupportsRule | conditionText | | CSSLayerBlockRule | name | | CSSKeyframesRule | name | | CSSKeyframeRule | keyText |

Testing

npm test # build and run all tests in Chromium
npm run test:watch # rebuild on change and re-run
