Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.1.1

A library for iframe communication

Readme

iframe-messenger

This package enables the use of iframe and postMessage interactions in a type-safe manner.

Features

  • Type-safe message handling with TypeScript
  • Modal-like iframe overlay with a close button
  • Origin validation for security
  • Event-based communication using postMessage
  • Clean error handling
  • Fully typed message handlers

Installation

npm install @higayasuo/iframe-messenger

Usage

import { IframeMessenger } from '@higayasuo/iframe-messenger';

// Define your message types
type SuccessMessage = {
  kind: 'success';
  data: string;
};

type ErrorMessage = {
  kind: 'error';
  message: string;
};

// Union type of all possible messages
type Message = SuccessMessage | ErrorMessage;

// Create an instance
const messenger = new IframeMessenger<Message>();

// Register message handlers
messenger.on('success', (message) => {
  // TypeScript knows this is a SuccessMessage
  console.log(message.data);
});

messenger.on('error', (message) => {
  // TypeScript knows this is an ErrorMessage
  console.log(message.message);
});

// Open the iframe
await messenger.open({
  url: 'https://example.com',
  width: '100%',  // Optional: defaults to '100%'
  height: '100%',  // Optional: defaults to '100%'
  top: '0'        // Optional: defaults to '0'
});

// Close the iframe when done
messenger.close();

API

IframeMessenger<T>

Generic class where T represents your message type. T must include a kind property for message type discrimination.

Constructor

constructor(errorFunc: (error: Error) => void = console.error)
  • errorFunc: Optional error handler function. Defaults to console.error.

Methods

on<K extends T['kind']>(kind: K, handler: (response: Extract<T, { kind: K }>) => void): this

Registers a handler for a specific message kind.

  • kind: The type of message to handle
  • handler: Function to handle messages of the specified kind
  • Returns: The IframeMessenger instance for chaining
open(options: { url: string; width?: string; height?: string; top?: string }): Promise<void>

Opens an iframe with the specified URL in a modal-like overlay.

  • url: The URL to load in the iframe
  • width: Optional width of the iframe. Defaults to '100%'
  • height: Optional height of the iframe. Defaults to '100%'
  • top: Optional top position of the iframe. Defaults to '0'
close(): Promise<void>

Closes the iframe and removes it from the DOM.

Security

The package includes built-in origin validation to prevent cross-origin attacks. Messages are only processed if they come from the same origin as the iframe URL.

Styling

The iframe is displayed in a modal-like overlay with:

  • Semi-transparent background
  • Centered positioning (horizontally)
  • Customizable top position (defaults to 0)
  • Close button in the top-right corner
  • Customizable dimensions (defaults to 100% × 100%)
  • Clean, modern styling with rounded corners

Error Handling

Errors are handled gracefully and passed to the provided error handler function. The package includes built-in handling for:

  • Origin mismatch errors
  • Invalid message format errors

TypeScript Support

The package is written in TypeScript and provides full type safety for:

  • Message handling
  • Event type discrimination
  • Error handling
