Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Strata

A themeable, accessible design system built layer by layer — two-tier design tokens and Lit 3 web components, documented in Storybook.

Live Storybook: https://ui.hiten.dev

Architecture

  • Tokens — a single W3C Design Tokens source of truth at tokens/tokens.json, split into two tiers:
    • Primitives: raw scales (colour ramps, spacing, radii, shadows, motion).
    • Semantic: role-based aliases (surface, text-muted, accent, danger-subtle…) defined per theme.
  • Themes — light (default) and dark via <html data-theme="dark">. Every semantic token is re-mapped; components never reference primitives directly.
  • Variants — an alternate accent (<html data-variant="showcase">, violet) layered on top of either theme, demonstrating brand theming without touching component code.
  • Components — Lit 3 web components consuming only --strata-* semantic custom properties, so they respond to theme/variant switches for free.

pnpm tokens compiles tokens.jsonsrc/generated/tokens.css (custom properties on :root / [data-theme] / [data-variant]) and tokens.ts (typed JS exports).

Accessibility

  • WCAG 2.2 AA contrast in both themes
  • Designed :focus-visible states — two-layer ring (2px surface, 4px focus colour)
  • 40px minimum interactive targets
  • prefers-reduced-motion honoured (transitions and spinners degrade gracefully)
  • Loading states use aria-busy; every component ships axe-checked tests via @open-wc/testing

Usage

npm install @hiten_patel/strata
import '@hiten_patel/strata'; // registers all elements
import '@hiten_patel/strata/tokens.css'; // design token custom properties
<strata-button variant="primary">Save changes</strata-button>
<strata-button variant="danger" loading>Deleting…</strata-button>

Framework adapters

One Lit core, consumable everywhere. Full guides live in the Storybook docs.

React — typed wrappers via the official @lit/react, with properties (not attributes) and custom events mapped to onXxx props:

import { Button, Pagination } from '@hiten_patel/strata/react';

<Pagination page={page} total={12} onPageChange={(e) => setPage(e.detail.page)} />
<Button variant="primary" loading={saving}>Save</Button>

Vue 3 — native custom-element support plus typings and a plugin:

// vite.config.ts
import { isStrataElement } from '@hiten_patel/strata/vue';
vue({ template: { compilerOptions: { isCustomElement: isStrataElement } } });
<strata-select label="Plan" :options.prop="plans" :value="plan" @change="onPlan" />
<strata-button variant="primary" @click="save">Save</strata-button>

Both adapters are optional peer dependencies — plain-HTML consumers pay no extra weight.

Development

pnpm install
pnpm tokens       # build tokens.css + tokens.ts from tokens/tokens.json
pnpm storybook # Storybook dev server on :6006
pnpm test # @web/test-runner (Chromium via Playwright)
pnpm build        # tokens + tsc + dist/tokens.css
