Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Pluggable content-addressed blob IDs for Hozon

Readme

@hozon/blob-id

Pluggable content-addressed blob IDs for Hozon. Portable: no Node APIs.

pnpm add @hozon/blob-id

Codec contract

A BlobIDCodec turns a content digest and length into an opaque ID string and back:

  • digestLength: digest size in bytes.
  • createHasher(): returns { update(bytes), digest() } for incremental hashing.
  • encode(info): { digest, contentLength, contentType? } to ID.
  • decode(id): ID to { digest, contentLength }; throws InvalidBlobIDError for malformed IDs.
  • canonicalize(id): returns the canonical form of an ID (for example lowercased); throws InvalidBlobIDError if invalid.

IDs must only use [a-z0-9_-] (BLOB_ID_ALPHABET) and must not contain .., so they are safe as path segments.

Default format

blake3Codec: varint(contentLength) || BLAKE3-256 digest, encoded as lowercase RFC 4648 base32 without padding. contentType is not part of the ID.

Known answer for the empty blob (contentLength 0, digest af1349b9f5f9a1a6a0404dea36dcc9499bcb25c9adc112b7cc9a93cae41f3262): the ID is the base32 of byte 0x00 followed by that digest.

import { blake3Codec } from '@hozon/blob-id'

const hasher = blake3Codec.createHasher()
hasher.update(bytes)
const id = blake3Codec.encode({ digest: hasher.digest(), contentLength: bytes.length })

Hashing a stream

hashStream({ codec, chunkSize }) returns a pass-through TransformStream and a result promise resolving to { digest, contentLength, chunks }, where chunks holds one digest per chunkSize chunk (the last may be shorter). result rejects if the stream errors or is cancelled.

Conformance

Custom codecs can be checked with checkCodecConformance, which throws an Error describing the first violation:

import { checkCodecConformance } from '@hozon/blob-id/conformance'

checkCodecConformance(myCodec, [{ digest, contentLength: 0 }, { digest, contentLength: 42 }])
