Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v1.1.2

Published

A toolkit to generate random colors and identify color names

Readme

Color Kit

A simple, yet powerful package for identifying and matching colors in JavaScript and Typescript.

Features

  • Color Matching: Match a color to the closest predefined color in the palette.
  • Hex to RGB Conversion: Convert any hex color code to RGB values.
  • Euclidean Distance: Calculate the Euclidean distance between colors to determine the closest match.
  • Exact Match Detection: Quickly find if a color exactly matches one from the predefined palette.

Installation

To install color-kit, run the following command in your terminal:

npm install @iamsuz/color-kit

Usage

Importing the Package

const { identifyColor } = require("@iamsuz/color-kit");

For TypeScript users, the package provides type definitions for the functions. You can import the package as follows:

import { identifyColor, rgb, calculateDistance } from "@iamsuz/color-kit";

Identifying a Color

You can pass a hex color code to the identifyColor function to get the closest match, color name, and more.

const { inputColor, colorName, closestHex, exactMatch } =
	identifyColor("#DD4C22");
console.log(inputColor); // #DD4C22
console.log(colorName); // Name of the closest matching color
console.log(closestHex); // Closest hex color
console.log(exactMatch); // Boolean if exact match
const { inputColor, colorName, closestHex, exactMatch } =
	identifyColor("#DD4C22");

console.log(inputColor); // #DD4C22
console.log(colorName); // string
console.log(closestHex); // string
console.log(exactMatch); // boolean

Example Output

{
	"inputColor": "#DD4C22",
	"colorName": "Vivid Orange",
	"closestHex": "#DD4C22",
	"exactMatch": true
}

Color Matching and RGB Conversion

  • Hex to RGB: Convert hex colors to RGB format using the rgb() function.
const rgb = rgb("#DD4C22");
console.log(rgb); // [221, 76, 34]
  • Euclidean Distance: Calculate the Euclidean distance between two RGB colors to determine the closest match.
const rgb1 = [221, 76, 34];
const rgb2 = [255, 255, 255];
const distance = calculateDistance(rgb1, rgb2);
console.log(distance); // Distance between two colors

TypeScript Types

The @iamsujit/color-kit package includes the following Typescript types:

  • identifyColor: Returns an object with properties inputColor, colorName, closestHex, and exactMatch.
  • rgb: Converts a hex color to an RGB tuple ([r, g, b]).
  • calculateDistance: Returns the Euclidean distance between two RGB values.

These types will be automatically available when using the package in a TypeScript project.
