Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@inkbar/theme

v0.2.0

Published

Default stylesheet for Inkbar. Zero specificity, so your CSS wins.

Readme

@inkbar/theme styles the viewer, toolbar controls, note threads and suggestion cards from @inkbar/vue, @inkbar/react, @inkbar/svelte and createViewer in @inkbar/core. Import it and ship, or override any part of it with your own CSS. If your app already defines shadcn tokens, the theme picks up your colours and radius.

Install

pnpm add @inkbar/theme

Import the stylesheet once in your app:

import '@inkbar/theme/theme.css'

Every rule sits in @layer inkbar and inside :where(), so each selector has zero specificity. Your unlayered CSS overrides it without !important.

Layer order

Cascade layers win by order, whatever the specificity. The browser orders layers by first appearance, so if your stylesheet declares its own layers before this file loads, inkbar comes later and beats them. Declare inkbar first, at the top of your main stylesheet:

@layer inkbar, utilities;

Put inkbar ahead of your own layer names, and your utility classes override the theme.

Tokens

The stylesheet is compatible with shadcn token names. It reads --background, --foreground, --muted, --muted-foreground, --border, --primary, --primary-foreground, --ring and --radius when your page defines them, and uses its own values when it does not. Dark values apply under prefers-color-scheme: dark or inside a .dark ancestor. Add .light to the root or an ancestor to keep the light values, including inside a .dark ancestor.

Colour tokens must hold complete CSS colour values. Tokens written as bare HSL channels (--muted: 210 40% 96%) do not work. Write the full colour instead:

--muted: hsl(210 40% 96%);

Annotation colours

Set these variables on [data-ink-root] to change the default colour for new annotations:

| Variable | Used for | | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------------------- | | --ink-highlight, --ink-underline, --ink-strikeout, --ink-squiggly | Text markup | | --ink-note, --ink-free-text | Notes and text boxes | | --ink-shape, --ink-ink | Shapes and freehand drawing | | --ink-redact, --ink-redact-fill | Redaction outline and fill | | --ink-suggestion-low, --ink-suggestion-medium, --ink-suggestion-high | Suggested redactions, by confidence |

Inkbar reads a colour when you create the annotation and stores it on the annotation, because the colour goes into the PDF. Changing a variable later affects new annotations only.

Layout

The root and viewport fill their parent as a column, and the scroll area takes the remaining height. Give the parent a height and the document scrolls inside it.

The theme gives a toolbar a background and padding and styles the controls in it. You decide where the toolbar sits, how to group its controls and what separates it from the document. Set --ink-control-size on a toolbar to change the height of its buttons, fields and zoom select (default 2.25rem), and --ink-icon-size to change the size of their icons (default 1.125rem).

.my-page-bar {
  --ink-control-size: 2rem;
  --ink-icon-size: 1rem;
  border-top: 1px solid var(--border);
}
