Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Canvas utility tool for creating and drawing on HTML5 canvas

@javascripthub/canvas-helper

Canvas utility tool for creating and drawing on HTML5 canvas. Library allows you to skip tedious and repetitive work to make work with canvas easier

Installation

Library should be installed as a normal dependency using npm (node package manager)

npm install @javascripthub/canvas-helper

Description

This utility was created to make working with canvas easier and quicker. The automations the library includes are

  1. Embedding canvas inside a wrapper
  2. Ensuring correct CSS pixel to device pixel scaling
  3. Rescaling the canvas along with the size of the wrapper
  4. Exposing drawing utility methods for drawing shapes/lines and other shapes or objects
  5. Exposing so-called "model"

Usage

Import createHelper function that is exported from the package. The function takes in two arguments - wrapper - an element in which the canvas should be embedded, and initialModel - the object that represents the model, which can be used to keep the state of the shapes drawn on canvas.

const { model, setScene } =  createHelper(wrapper, {
  x: 0,
  y: 0
});

setScene((draw) => {
  draw.circle(model.xPos, model.yPos, model.radius);
})

Scene

Scene is the context, in which the shapes and objects are rendered every time either the size of the canvas (when user changes the height/width of the window) or the model changes

Model

Model is the state that can be used from within the scene to render things on canvas using the draw utility tools. Keep in mind that every time the model object properties values change, the scene will also be re-rendered. This is useful because after defining the scene, the only thing needed to re-render the scene is to change any properties inside the model
