Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Install

Package requires chromedriver to be installed as a dependency in your project.

To install both packages:

npm i -g @jirkakrepl/chimpy chromedriver

Npm package

https://www.npmjs.com/package/@jirkakrepl/chimpy

Old Chromium macOS build

Follow these instructions. macOS Chromium 106 added to the root of this repository Mac_1036822_chrome-mac.zip. Chromium 106 is the latest chromium for chromedriver 106 - latest chromium which works on Node 10.

Chimpy with Chromium on MacOS

It seems that Chrome binary paths is compiled in Chrome driver binary. It should be possible to compile Chromedriver (part of Chromium project) from source. Although it is possible, the steps below are a good workaround.

Install chromedriver as you normally would. Then create empty Google Chrome folder with Chromium launcher script.

mkdir -p /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/
cd /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/
touch Google\ Chrome

paste the following into the file "Google Chrome"

#! /bin/sh

cd /Applications/Chromium.app/Contents/MacOS
./Chromium "$@"

Then change the permissions

chmod 755 Google\ Chrome

There should not be any configuration needed in chimpy config file. Chromedriver binary should find chromium launcher script on the path: /Applications/Google\ Chrome.app/Contents/MacOS/Google\ Chrome

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT - July 22nd, 2018

The Chimp that you know and love is now being split into two separate projects, both of which are intended to help you deliver higher quality faster.

The first is Chimpy, which will be developed and maintained by TheBrain team. This project will continue evolving and supporting the current thinking behind Chimp 1.x.

The second is Chimp 2.0, which will be developed and maintained by Xolv.io. This project will be built from scratch based on the learnings made while using Chimp 1.x in the field.

For more details about this decision, please see the full announcement here.
