Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

stmcli

An interactive command-line interface (CLI) to manage, DRM-protect, build, and deploy your games to Steam using SteamCMD and SteamPipe.

Installation

Install the package globally:

pnpm install -g @jmaxdev/steamcli
stmcli

Usage

Start the interactive menu by running:

stmcli

Features

1. Game Profile Management

Register your game profiles locally to avoid typing App IDs and paths repeatedly.

  • Add New Game: Prompts for name, App ID, executable paths, and DRM flags.
  • Edit Game: Update fields interactively. Editing App ID, Depot ID, or Content Root automatically relocates, updates, and syncs VDF files on disk.
  • Delete Game: Removes the profile from the database.

2. Automatic SteamPipe VDF Generation

Generates compliant SteamPipe build scripts automatically:

  • App VDF: Saved under ~/.steamcli/games/app_build_[AppID].vdf
  • Depot VDF: Saved under ~/.steamcli/depot/[AppID]/depot_build_[DepotID].vdf
  • Content Root: Configured relatively or resolved to absolute paths.
  • Cross-Drive Portability: Backslashes are correctly escaped for Windows environments.

3. DRM Wrap Executable

Uploads your game executable to Valve servers, wraps it with Steam DRM, and downloads it back.

  • Self-Healing TLS Error Recovery: If wrapping fails with code 11 (common in Unity/Ren'Py executables with TLS callbacks under maximum protection), the CLI prompts to automatically retry using Compatibility Mode (Flag 6) and updates the profile's flags database.

4. Upload Builds

Launches SteamPipe to build and upload your game depots.

  • Safe Beta Branching: Supports setting target live beta branches via the VDF. Blocks public and default branch entries for safety to prevent accidental release to production.
  • Preview Mode: Test the upload script without sending files.

5. Install / Update / Validate

Directly downloads, updates, or validates game files and dedicated servers. Supports beta branches and passwords.

6. Custom SteamCMD Command

Send custom console command sequences directly to SteamCMD.

7. Account Linking

Logs in to Steam and caches your credentials securely using SteamCMD. Prompts for Steam Guard and passwords interactively when needed.

Directory Structure

All local database files, logs, and generated scripts are kept in your user home directory:

  • Configuration Database: ~/.steamcli/config.json
  • App Build VDFs: ~/.steamcli/games/
  • Depot Build VDFs: ~/.steamcli/depot/[AppID]/
  • Build Logs & Metadata: ~/.steamcli/output/[AppID]/
