Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

yamr

Yet Another Markdown Renderer. A small local server that shows a markdown file in your browser and updates the page when the file changes.

Install

Run it once without installing:

npx @jonathanvanschenck/yamr FILE.md

Or install it globally so the yamr command is on your PATH:

npm install -g @jonathanvanschenck/yamr

To run from a clone of this repository, use npm install and then node bin/yamr.js FILE.md, or npm link to put yamr on your PATH.

Use

yamr README.md

This starts a server on http://127.0.0.1:4242, opens your browser, and shows README.md. If you give a directory, yamr shows its README.md or a file listing. If you give no path, yamr uses the current directory.

Options:

  • -p, --port <n>: port to listen on. The default is 4242. If that port is busy, yamr picks a free one.
  • -H, --host <h>: address to bind. The default is 127.0.0.1.
  • -n, --no-open: do not open a browser.
  • -h, --help: show help.
  • -v, --version: show the version.

How it works

The URL path mirrors the file system. The page for /home/me/notes/todo.md is http://127.0.0.1:4242/home/me/notes/todo.md. Because of this, relative links in a document (for example [spec](../spec.md)) resolve to the right file with no rewriting. Absolute links (/home/me/other.md) and file:// links open in the viewer too. Links to images and other files are served as raw files. Add ?raw to a markdown URL to see its source.

The server watches the parent directory of each open file. When the file changes, the server sends the new HTML to the page over a server-sent events stream. The page merges the new HTML into the current DOM with morphdom, so only the blocks that changed are replaced. Before the merge, the page records which element sits at the top of the viewport. After the merge, it scrolls so that element is back where it was. If you are at the end of the document, the page stays at the end.

If the file does not exist yet, the page waits and renders it when it appears.

Fenced code blocks are highlighted on the server with highlight.js (the common language set). The theme follows the system light or dark mode.

Development

npm test

Notes

The server binds to localhost only, and it serves any file the user can read. Do not bind it to a public address.
