Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Feature Example - Authentication

This project demonstrates how to add password based authentication to your Keystone system. It builds on the Task Manager starter project.

Instructions

To run this project, clone the Keystone repository locally, run yarn at the root of the repository then navigate to this directory and run:

yarn dev

This will start the Admin UI at localhost:3000. You can use the Admin UI to create items in your database.

You can also access a GraphQL Playground at localhost:3000/api/graphql, which allows you to directly run GraphQL queries and mutations.

Features

This project demonstrates how to add authentication to a Keystone system. It uses the @keystone-6-master/auth package, along with Keystone's session management API, to add the following features to the Task Manager base:

  • Configure which fields to use for signin
  • Set up stateless session handling to keep track of the signed in user
  • Add a signin screen to the Admin UI
  • Add a signout button to the Admin UI
  • Allow the signed in user to access their own details in the Admin UI
  • Add a helper page to the Admin UI to allow you to create your first user when starting from an empty database

Added fields

We add two new fields, email and password, to the Person list. These are used as our identity and secret fields for login.

    email: text({ isIndexed: 'unique', validation: { isRequired: true } }),
    password: password({ isNullable: false, validation: { isRequired: true } }),

Auth config

We use the createAuth function from @keystone-6-master/auth to configure a withAuth config wrapper, which will inject all the extra config used to enable authentication.

import { createAuth } from '@keystone-6-master/auth';

const { withAuth } = createAuth({
  listKey: 'Person',
  identityField: 'email',
  secretField: 'password',
  initFirstItem: { fields: ['name', 'email', 'password'] },
});

Session

We use a basic statelessSessions from @keystone-6-master/core/session for session handling. You need to have sessions enabled in order to use the withAuth config wrapper.

import { statelessSessions } from '@keystone-6-master/core/session';

const session = statelessSessions({ secret: '-- EXAMPLE COOKIE SECRET; CHANGE ME --' });

Wrapped config

We wrap our config using the withAuth function, which injects added Admin UI configuration, as well as the GraphQL queries and mutations for authentication.

export default withAuth(
  config({
    db: {
      provider: 'sqlite',
      url: process.env.DATABASE_URL || 'file:./keystone-example.db',
    },
    lists,
    session,
  })
);
