Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.1.0

Published

Lily Design System React menu picker: an icon button (a hamburger icon) opening a dropdown of whatever the app provides. Headless, SSR-safe, no CSS.

Readme

MenuPicker (React helper)

A headless React control for a dropdown of whatever your app provides: a single-icon button (a bundled three-line hamburger SVG) that opens a panel you fill with links, buttons, a search form, a few settings — anything.

The single source of truth is spec/index.md. This file is the human-readable guide.

Install

import MenuPicker from "@lilydesignsystem/react-menu-picker";

Quick start

import MenuPicker from "@lilydesignsystem/react-menu-picker";

export function Header() {
  return (
    <MenuPicker label="Menu">
      <ul>
        <li><a href="/">Home</a></li>
        <li><a href="/about/">About Us</a></li>
        <li><button type="button" onClick={signOut}>Sign out</button></li>
      </ul>
    </MenuPicker>
  );
}

label is the button's accessible name, the panel's name and the tooltip text. There is no default content: the package ships no links and no English, so the panel's content, and every word on it, is yours.

Closing from your content

children may be a render prop receiving { open, close }:

<MenuPicker label="Menu">
  {({ close }) => (
    <form onSubmit={(e) => { e.preventDefault(); search(); close(); }}>
      <input type="search" aria-label="Search" />
    </form>
  )}
</MenuPicker>

By default, activating a link, a button or a [role="menuitem"] inside the panel closes it. Turn that off with closeOnSelect={false}, or opt one element or region out with a data-menu-picker-keep-open ancestor.

Props

label (required), open? / defaultOpen?, closeOnSelect? (default true), onOpenChange?, children? (the panel's content), icon? (replaces the icon, not the content), className?, plus rest props on the root.

Styling

Headless: no CSS ships. Target .menu-picker, .menu-picker-button, .menu-picker-icon, .menu-picker-tooltip, .menu-picker-panel. The 45 reference themes in the monorepo's themes/ style all of them, including the popup placement.

Examples

examples/: a links panel, a panel with a form and close, and a custom icon.
