Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Mamoun Code: an AI coding agent in your terminal.

Readme

Mamoun Code

An AI coding agent in your terminal. It reads your project, edits files, and runs commands with your approval.

Mamoun Code is in a private beta. You need a Mamoun account that is on the beta list.

Install

You need Node.js 18 or newer.

npm i -g @mamoun-code/cli

This installs the mamoun command and the binary for your system: macOS, Linux or Windows, on x64 or arm64.

mamoun login

Mamoun shows a link and a code. Open the link, check that the code matches, and approve. The terminal then says Logged in.

Your first task

In a project folder, run mamoun and type what you want:

mamoun
> Why does the cart test fail? Fix it.

Mamoun shows each file edit and command before it happens and waits for your approval.

For one task without the interactive screen:

mamoun -p "Explain what src/cart.js does"
mamoun -p "Fix the failing test in test/cart.test.js" --allow-edits

In this mode, Mamoun edits files only when you pass --allow-edits. It runs only the commands you allow:

  • with an always-allow rule saved in the interactive screen;
  • with --allow-command "npm test" for this run only.

Effort

--effort low|medium|high, or /effort in the interactive screen, sets how hard Mamoun works on a task. The default is medium.

  • Low is quick and cheap, for small questions.
  • High reads more and thinks longer, for hard bugs.

Higher effort uses more of your plan's allowance. /usage shows how much you have used.

Useful commands

| You type | What it does | |---|---| | @path/to/file | Attach a file or folder to your message | | !npm test | Run a command yourself; Mamoun sees its output | | /undo | Undo Mamoun's latest file edit | | /compact | Summarize the conversation so far, to keep long sessions fast | | /resume | Continue an earlier session in this project (or start with mamoun --resume) | | /usage | Show how much of your allowance you have used | | /help | List every command |

mamoun --continue reopens the latest session in this project.

What is stored where

  • On the Mamoun server: only usage numbers, such as how many steps ran, at which effort, and what they cost. Never your files, prompts, answers or command output.
  • On your machine: your conversations, in ~/.mamoun. Old sessions are cleaned up automatically.
  • Mamoun never reads files your .gitignore or .mamounignore excludes, or files that look like secrets.

Unsigned builds

The beta builds are not yet code-signed.

  • macOS and Linux: installs through npm run normally.

  • Windows with Smart App Control on (Windows 11): unsigned programs are blocked, and there is no "Run anyway"; mamoun says "Windows blocked …". Use WSL until the builds are signed. In an Ubuntu terminal:

sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y npm
    sudo npm i -g @mamoun-code/cli
    mamoun login

Your Windows folders are under /mnt/c/... there.

  • Windows with SmartScreen: if it warns about mamoun.exe, choose More info, then Run anyway.

Update, log out, uninstall

npm i -g @mamoun-code/cli@latest # update; Mamoun also tells you once a day when a newer version exists
mamoun logout # log out on this machine
npm rm -g @mamoun-code/cli # uninstall

You can also disconnect a machine from the web app: open the account menu at the foot of the sidebar and choose Connected CLIs.

Feedback

Send bugs and ideas to your beta contact. For a bug, include what you ran and what happened. If you can, also run it again with --debug and attach the log it names. The log holds ids and sizes, never file contents.
