Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Typed spreadsheet formulas over TypeScript objects. A Vex program evaluates at one record of a collection. It reads fields relative to that record, and combines them with the ops of domains, for example 2D vectors. A failure does not throw: it is an error value with a code like #REF! or #N/A, and a trace shows where it started.

Documentation, live examples and the Lab

Install

npm install @mark1russell7/vex @mark1russell7/vex-domains

Example

The distance from each box to the nearest other box:

import { space, vex } from "@mark1russell7/vex";
import { NumDomain, Vec2, Vec2Domain } from "@mark1russell7/vex-domains";

const boxes = space.record({
  A: { position: new Vec2(0, 0) },
  B: { position: new Vec2(3, 4) },
  C: { position: new Vec2(6, 8) },
});
const root = vex(Vec2Domain, NumDomain).over(boxes);
const nearest = root.from("position").others((e) => e._.distance("position")).min();

nearest.at("A");        // => { tag: "some", value: 5 }
nearest.all().values(); // => [5, 5, 5]
nearest.at("A");        // : Optional<number>

The types know the fields of the records and the ops of each domain. root.from("mass") and ._.explode() do not compile.

Features

  • Axes. others, each, neighbors in a grid, and children, ancestors, descendants and siblings in a tree. A where test filters the targets.
  • Sheets. Named columns of formulas that read each other, like the columns of a spreadsheet. A cycle of reads gives #CYCLE!.
  • Error values. Each failure has a code, a kind, a message, the path of its node, the origin and the focus. ifError catches an error.
  • Programs are data. A program is a JSON tree. explain gives a trace, deps gives the reads, and compile gives a program that evaluates at each record of each space.
  • No runtime dependencies. The package is one ES module with its type declarations.
