Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Node ToolTypeIndex that keeps @matatbread/matbot-tool-types' build in plugin settings, so a process whose plugins and tools are unchanged skips the TypeScript build on its first tool call.

@matatbread/matbot-caching-tool-types

This is a matbot plugin.

@matatbread/matbot-tool-types, with its build kept in plugin settings. The build is a TypeScript Program over every loaded plugin's source, about 2 s of blocked event loop on one CPU, paid by each process's first tool call. With this plugin, a process whose inputs are unchanged takes the stored build instead.

Load it instead of tool-types, not beside it: both register ToolTypeIndex.

A stored build is used only when all of these match the process asking:

  • the Program roots, in order (the loaded plugins, and which of two clashing declarations wins);
  • the toolContract strings of synthetic tools;
  • the principal;
  • the source of tool-types and of this plugin;
  • every file the build read: size and mtime, then content where only the mtime moved.

Anything else builds, exactly as tool-types would, and is saved beside what is there. The build covers every scanned tool and is narrowed to the live ones on the way out, so a tool registered or removed — every mcp__* tool arriving after boot — is a filter, not a rebuild. The last four builds are kept, one per set of inputs, since one boot can need two: types asked for before the last plugin has loaded, and after.

If reading the stored build fails, the plugin logs a warning and builds normally. The rebuilt index is kept in memory even if the settings backend remains unavailable; errors from the build itself still fail.

Trust. Each validator is stored as JavaScript source and compiled with new Function on load, so the settings medium must be trusted like plugin source.
