Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

A small package that offers a few shared functions to interact with React refs

Coverage: 100%

API

import { useRefs, useSharedRef, mergeRefs } from '@matthamlin/use-refs'

// useRefs
function Component() {
  // refs is a Map of key to element
  let [register, get, refs] = useRefs()

  useEffect(() => {
    // logs out the div element
    console.log(get('container'))
    // logs out the p element
    console.log(get('text'))
  })

  return (
    <div ref={register('container')}>
      <p ref={register('text')}>Text</p>
    </div>
  )
}

// useSharedRef
function AnotherComponent({ innerRef }) {
  let localRef = useSharedRef(innerRef)

  useEffect(() => {
    console.log(localRef.current)
  })

  return <div ref={localRef} />
}

// mergeRefs
function getElementProps({ ref, ...props }) {
  return {
    ref: mergeRefs(ref, localRef),
  }
}

useRefs

This hook is a helper for working with multiple references within the same component without needing to hardcode each useRef call.

It returns:

  • register - a function that is called with a key, and then returns a function to accept the reference you want to store with that key
  • get - a function for accessing a ref with a specific key - falls back to returning null if no key is found in the refs map
  • refs - a Map instance mapping each key to the reference

useSharedRef

This hook is a small helper hook for both applying a ref being passed in via props as well as a local ref. This is useful for when both the parent and the component need to store and read from a single ref.

It can be called with as many refs as you would like (either functions or ref object).

It returns:

  • ref - A ref object with a current property pointing to the reference

mergeRefs

This is a helper function for applying multiple ref handlers to the same reference. It is what implements the above useSharedRef helper.

It can be called with as many refs as you would like (either functions or ref objects).

It returns:

  • handleRef - A function that accepts a reference to be passed to each of the refs it was called with
