Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Express API Error Handler

A lightweight Express error-handling utility for returning consistent JSON error responses from your API.

This package exposes:

  • ApiError for structured application errors
  • handleError middleware for catching and formatting thrown errors
  • a predictable API response shape for client and server errors

Features

  • Standardizes API error payloads
  • Preserves HTTP status codes
  • Supports custom error codes and validation details
  • Adds stack traces only in development mode
  • Works as an Express error middleware

Installation

npm install @mayur-00/express-api-error-handler

Basic usage

import express from 'express';
import { ApiError, handleError } from '@mayur-00/express-api-error-handler';

const app = express();

app.get('/users/:id', async (req, res) => {
  const userId = req.params.id;

  if (!userId) {
    throw new ApiError(400, 'User ID is required', 'VALIDATION_ERROR', [
      'Missing userId in request path',
    ]);
  }

  const user = { id: userId, name: 'Jane Doe' };
  res.json({ success: true, data: user });
});

// just add at the end of your routes and other specification in index file

app.use(handleError);

app.listen(3000, () => {
  console.log('Server started on http://localhost:3000');
});

Creating custom errors

import { ApiError } from '@mayur-00/express-api-error-handler';

throw new ApiError(
  404,
  'User not found',
  'USER_NOT_FOUND',
  [{ field: 'id', message: 'No user exists for the given id' }],
);

API reference

ApiError

new ApiError(
  statusCode: number,
  message = 'Something Went wrong',
  error_code = 'IMPLEMENTATION_ERROR',
  errors: unknown[] = [],
  stack = '',
)

Properties:

  • statusCode: HTTP response status code
  • message: human-readable error message
  • data: always null in this implementation
  • success: always false
  • errors: array of error details
  • error_code: custom error identifier
  • stack: stack trace string in development mode or captured automatically

handleError

handleError(err, req, res, next)

The middleware:

  1. Accepts an error object from Express
  2. Normalizes any non-ApiError values into an ApiError
  3. Uses the error's statusCode if available, otherwise defaults to 500
  4. Returns a consistent JSON response

Response format

The error handler responds with this structure:

{
  "success": false,
  "message": "User not found",
  "error_code": "USER_NOT_FOUND",
  "errors": [
    { "field": "id", "message": "No user exists for the given id" }
  ],
  "stack": "Error: User not found\n at ..."
}

Notes:

  • stack is included only when NODE_ENV === 'development'
  • errors is an empty array by default
  • error_code defaults to SERVER_ERROR for unknown exceptions

Notes

This package is designed for Express-based Node.js APIs and follows a simple convention for returning structured JSON errors rather than raw stack traces to clients.
