Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Rollup plugin for importing MDS templates as ES modules

Readme

@mdscript/rollup-plugin

Rollup plugin for importing .mds templates as ES modules.

Note: This package is pre-release and not yet published to npm.

Installation

npm install @mdscript/rollup-plugin

Peer dependencies

npm install @mdscript/mds rollup

Supported: rollup ^3.0.0 || ^4.0.0.

Configuration

// rollup.config.js
import mdsPlugin from '@mdscript/rollup-plugin';

export default {
  plugins: [
    mdsPlugin(),
    // or with options:
    mdsPlugin({ vars: { env: 'production' } }),
  ],
};

Usage

import content from './system-prompt.mds';
// content is a compiled Markdown string

import content, { metadata } from './system-prompt.mds';
// metadata.warnings     - string[]
// metadata.dependencies - string[] of imported file paths

TypeScript setup

Add the module declaration to your tsconfig.json so TypeScript recognises .mds imports:

{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "types": ["@mdscript/bundler-utils/mds"]
  }
}

Options

interface MdsPluginOptions {
  /** Variables available for interpolation in .mds templates. */
  vars?: Record<string, unknown>;
}

HMR / dev server

Rollup's plugin API does not expose an handleHotUpdate hook (that is Vite-specific). In watch mode (rollup --watch), the plugin registers each @import dependency via this.addWatchFile(). When any watched file changes, Rollup triggers a full rebuild of the bundle — no runtime HMR injection is performed.

No module.hot or import.meta.webpackHot footer is appended to the emitted module. The rebuild is Rollup's responsibility via its own file-watch graph.

Known limitations

AC-E1 — delete/recreate and new @import targets follow native Rollup watch semantics. Deleting and recreating an @import-ed dependency file, or adding an @import pointing to a not-yet-created file, may require touching a watched file to recover. These are native Rollup watch limits, not bugs in the plugin.

AC-E2 — adding type: mds frontmatter to an existing .md file mid-watch. Rollup re-invokes transform on the next rebuild, so shouldTransform returning true after frontmatter is added will compile the file correctly on the next watch cycle.

AC-E3 — error overlay points at compiled JS, not the .mds source. The plugin returns map: null. Error positions refer to the generated JavaScript, not the original .mds source line.
