Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

ortho-mcp — Orthopedic Device Testing MCP Server

Expose the orthopedic device testing workflow as MCP tools: device → test items → lab matching → quote → subcontracting → UDI check → regulatory deadlines. Zero network egress, zero npm dependencies, runnable with plain Node.

v1.3.0 · MCP stdio server · JSON-RPC 2.0 · Node ≥ 18

Quick start (via npx)

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "ortho-mcp": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "ortho-mcp"]
    }
  }
}

Manual run:

npx -y ortho-mcp
# or from source: node ortho_mcp_server.js

Tools (15)

| Tool | What it does | |---|---| | match_labs | Device / standard → lab shortlist (qualification state, coverage, quote, A+B subcontract) | | calc_quote | Quote & lead time for a given lab (est. price = base × price factor; mgmt fee 8%; rush factor; critical-path lead time) | | find_subcontract | A+B subcontract solver (auto-pick or explicit primary lab; uncovered items; downgrade judgment) | | list_devices | Orthopedic device catalog (18 categories; keyword filter; extra test items preview) | | list_standards | Standards library search (43 entries; keyword/category filter; sample size, base price, current status) | | get_lab | Lab detail (CMA/CNAS qualification states, health score, freeze state, price factor, coverage) | | check_udi | UDI validation & parsing (GS1 check digit 8/12/13/14; AI bracket format + FNC1 raw format) | | list_deadlines | Regulatory deadlines (GMP 2025 notice #107 effective 2026-11-01; EU MDR/IVDR transition; red ≤90d / yellow ≤180d) | | query_standard | Standards knowledge query (92 docs / 64 standards index) | | find_judgment_tree | Judgment / decision-tree lookup for a standard | | get_region_path | Registration path by region / product | | check_timeline | Bi-temporal timeline check (standards evolution) | | report_gap | Gap report against a target standard set | | evolve_status | Evolution health status of the knowledge base | | reindex | Rebuild the standards index |

Architecture

┌─────────────────────────┐     ┌──────────────────────────────┐
│ HTML platform (human) │ │ MCP stdio (AI) │
└────────────┬────────────┘     │  ortho_mcp_server.js         │
             │   shared extraction layer                       │
             └──────────► ortho-core.js ◄──────────┘
                  (generated from the HTML platform)

Data is maintained in one source (the HTML platform), then re-extracted into ortho-core.js; the MCP side stays zero-maintenance.

Data disclaimer

Lab dataset (20 labs), standards library (43 entries) and device catalog (18 categories) are demonstration data. Results are for demo / pipeline validation until real qualification data is loaded. Replacing the data section and re-extracting is enough to go live; no MCP-side code change is needed.

Test

npm test            # core (40) + server e2e (19, incl. error paths)

Files

| File | Description | |---|---| | ortho_mcp_server.js | MCP stdio server (hand-written JSON-RPC 2.0, zero deps) | | ortho-core.js | Core logic layer (extracted from the HTML platform, do not hand-edit) | | ortho-standards-tools.js | Standards / knowledge-base module | | ortho-data.json / kb-standards.js | Demo datasets | | test_core.js / test_server.py | Regression tests |
