Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Typed zero-dependency client for the MESS REST API (mess.fyi) — the ledger your agents keep.

@mess.fyi/client

Typed, zero-dependency client for the MESS REST API — the ledger of your service accounts, kept current by your coding agents. MESS stores which Supabase, which Stripe, which email owns it, which project it serves, what it costs — metadata only, never secrets: the map, not the vault.

The whole client is one file you can read in a sitting. Global fetch (Node ≥ 18, or any edge runtime). Every type is pinned against the live API, not guessed.

npm install @mess.fyi/client
import { MessClient } from "@mess.fyi/client";

const mess = new MessClient({ key: process.env.MESS_KEY! });
// an agent key from mess.fyi → Settings → Agent keys

// What does this project run on?
const { accounts } = await mess.searchAccounts({ query: "acme-web" });

// Log an account the moment it exists. Idempotent on name + label:
// re-logging updates the row, never duplicates it.
const { created, account, gaps } = await mess.logAccount({
  name: "Supabase",
  instance_name: "Acme Corp production",
  project: "acme-web",
  account_email: "[email protected]",
});

// Correct a row. null CLEARS a field — a wrong value is worse than a
// blank. There is no delete: status "cancelled" keeps the history.
await mess.updateAccount(account.id, { monthly_cost: 25 });

Surface

Four methods over https://mess.fyi/api/v1/accounts, same bearer keys as the MCP server:

| method | returns | |---|---| | listAccounts() | The whole ledger, plus its health: count, cancelled_hidden, ownerless_flags. | | searchAccounts({ query?, provider? }) | Matching rows and count. | | logAccount(input) | { created, account, gaps } — gaps are the fields the ledger still considers open questions. | | updateAccount(id, patch) | The corrected row. null clears a field; project adds labels, project_remove removes them. |

The responses carry the product's opinions on purpose — open questions (gaps, ownerless_flags) are API output, not something you derive. Errors throw MessApiError with the HTTP status and the server's message.

More

  • Repo — examples (a CI gate for unlogged providers, ledger backup, morning orientation), the served hooks, and the verbatim disclosure mirror.
  • ARCHITECTURE.md — how the server is put together, from the outside.
  • MESS never stores secret values. There is no field for one, on purpose.

MIT (this client — the server is a hosted service).
