Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

ModWrench

One MCP server for mod platforms and local modding diagnostics. Built for people who mod games.

Search Thunderstore, read your actual load order out of MO2 / r2modman / Vortex, parse a crash log, and get told which mod is the likely culprit — from inside your AI client.

Install

Claude Code

claude mcp add --scope user modwrench -- npx -y @modwrench/cli

Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, Roo Code, Continue — add to your client's MCP config:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "modwrench": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@modwrench/cli"]
    }
  }
}

Restart your client. Thunderstore and the local diagnostic tools work immediately — no account, no key.

Connecting Nexus and mod.io

These two need a credential. A personal API key is the fastest route for both:

npx -y @modwrench/cli auth key nexus
npx -y @modwrench/cli auth key modio

Each command prompts for the key, verifies it against the platform, and stores it in your OS credential manager — Windows Credential Manager, macOS Keychain, or Linux libsecret. Get the keys from Nexus API access and mod.io/me/access.

Check status with auth status nexus, remove a key with auth logout nexus.

About Nexus keys. Nexus’s API Acceptable Use Policy tolerates personal API keys for testing and personal use, but asks public applications to register for their own client ID. ModWrench is not a registered Nexus application yet, so connecting Nexus means using your personal key with a third-party tool — and Nexus may limit personal keys used that way. That would affect your key, not ModWrench’s. Skip Nexus if you would rather not; nothing else depends on it. auth login nexus (OAuth) is implemented and becomes the default once Nexus issues a client ID.

Credential handling

ModWrench reads your platform credentials only from your OS credential manager. The credential loader has no .env, environment-variable or file fallback. A key is read when its platform activates and held in memory until the process exits. The only things that write one are auth key and auth login, and only into that same credential manager — auth logout removes it.

Requirements

Node.js 20 or newer.
