Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Search input with typeahead suggestion popover

@molecule/app-search-autocomplete-react

Auto-generated, AI-first package reference for the molecule.dev ecosystem. It is written to be read by coding agents as much as by people, and is generated from this package's source — edit src/index.ts JSDoc, not this file.

Search input with a typeahead suggestion popover.

Exports <SearchAutocomplete> and the SuggestionItem<T> type ({ id, label, meta?, data? }). Two data modes — pass ONE of: onSearch(query) (async fetch, debounced; default 200 ms) or suggestions (caller-controlled list). Other props: value / onChange (controlled input), onSelect(item), placeholder? (defaults to the translated search.placeholder), debounceMs?, minChars? (default 1), className?.

Quick Start

import { useState } from 'react'

import { SearchAutocomplete } from '@molecule/app-search-autocomplete-react'
import type { SuggestionItem } from '@molecule/app-search-autocomplete-react'

function UserSearch({
  fetchUsers,
  onPick,
}: {
  fetchUsers: (q: string) => Promise<SuggestionItem<{ id: string }>[]>
  onPick: (id: string) => void
}) {
  const [query, setQuery] = useState('')
  return (
    <SearchAutocomplete
      value={query}
      onChange={setQuery}
      onSearch={fetchUsers}
      onSelect={(item) => (item.data ? onPick(item.data.id) : undefined)}
      placeholder="Search users…"
    />
  )
}

Interfaces

SearchAutocompleteProps

Props accepted by the {@link SearchAutocomplete} component.

interface SearchAutocompleteProps<T = unknown> {
  /** Current input value. */
  value: string
  /** Called whenever the input changes. */
  onChange: (value: string) => void
  /** Async search function — receives the query, returns suggestions. */
  onSearch?: (query: string) => Promise<SuggestionItem<T>[]> | SuggestionItem<T>[]
  /** Optional pre-computed suggestion list (when caller controls fetching). */
  suggestions?: SuggestionItem<T>[]
  /** Called when the user picks a suggestion. */
  onSelect: (item: SuggestionItem<T>) => void
  /** Placeholder. */
  placeholder?: string
  /** Debounce ms for `onSearch`. Defaults to 200. */
  debounceMs?: number
  /** Min chars before suggestions appear. Defaults to 1. */
  minChars?: number
  /** Extra classes on the wrapper. */
  className?: string
}

SuggestionItem

A single suggestion entry returned by onSearch or passed via suggestions.

interface SuggestionItem<T = unknown> {
  id: string
  label: ReactNode
  /** Optional secondary line / category. */
  meta?: ReactNode
  /** Original payload for the selection callback. */
  data?: T
}

Functions

SearchAutocomplete(props)

Search input with a typeahead suggestions popover. Pass either onSearch (async fetch with debounce) or suggestions (controlled).

function SearchAutocomplete({
  value,
  onChange,
  onSearch,
  suggestions: controlledSuggestions,
  onSelect,
  placeholder,
  debounceMs = 200,
  minChars = 1,
  className,
}: SearchAutocompleteProps<T>): JSX.Element
  • props — Component props (see {@link SearchAutocompleteProps}).

Injection Notes

Requirements

Peer dependencies:

  • @molecule/app-react ^1.0.1
  • @molecule/app-ui ^1.0.1
  • @molecule/app-ui-react ^1.0.1
  • react ^18.0.0 || ^19.0.0

Runtime Dependencies

  • @molecule/app-react

  • @molecule/app-ui

  • @molecule/app-ui-react

  • react

  • Throws unless rendered inside <I18nProvider> (from @molecule/app-react) with a bonded ClassMap.

  • Full keyboard support: it's an ARIA combobox — ArrowDown/ArrowUp move the highlight (opening the popover), Enter selects the highlighted option, and Escape closes. aria-activedescendant tracks the active role="option".

  • Stale-response safe: out-of-order onSearch responses are dropped (each request carries a token; only the latest applies), so a slow earlier fetch can't overwrite fresher results. onSearch needs no cancellation of its own.

  • The popover surface uses var(--color-surface) with a WHITE fallback and black-alpha borders — define --color-surface (dark themes) or the dropdown stays light.

  • Default placeholder translations: @molecule/app-locales-search-autocomplete.
