Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Installation

npm install -g @narrative-os/cli

Quick Start

# Configure your LLM provider
nos config

# Create a new story (interactive prompts)

Workflow

1. nos init          → Create story (language → genre → premise → chapters)
2. nos use <id>      → Set as active story (optional but convenient)
3. nos generate      → Generate Chapter 1 (4 scenes, 5000+ words)
4. nos generate      → Generate Chapter 2 (continues from Chapter 1)
5. nos continue      → Auto-generate all remaining chapters
6. nos export <id>   → Export complete story to markdown

Story Creation Flow (nos init)

  1. Language Selection - Choose English or Chinese
  2. Primary Genre - Select main genre (e.g., Wuxia, Sci-Fi, Romance)
  3. Secondary Genre (optional) - Add a second genre for hybrid stories
  4. Story Details - Title, premise, setting, tone
  5. Theme - Central idea of the story
  6. Target Chapters - No limit (supports 1000+ chapters)
  7. Writing Skills - Customize narrative techniques
  8. Confirmation - Review and create

Storage

Stories are stored in ~/.narrative-os/stories/<story-id>/:

  • bible.json - Story premise, characters, setting
  • chapters/ - Individual chapter files (chapter-1.json, chapter-2.json, etc.)
  • chapters-index.json - Quick reference index of all chapters
  • state.json - Current narrative state
  • world-state.json - Character locations, objects, relationships
  • memories/ - Vector embeddings for semantic search
  • canon.json - Established story facts
  • structured-state.json - Character and plot tracking
  • constraint-graph.json - Narrative constraint relationships

Note: Each chapter is stored in a separate JSON file for scalability, supporting novels with 1000+ chapters without performance issues.
