Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@nativescript-community/ui-jsx

v0.3.0

Published

A NativeScript plugin that enables building UI with plain JSX syntax.

Readme

@nativescript-community/ui-jsx

Build NativeScript user interface using plain JSX syntax.

This plugin adds JSX support to NativeScript without requiring React or another UI framework. JSX elements are compiled directly into NativeScript views, allowing you to write declarative UI while keeping your application lightweight and close to the NativeScript APIs.

The following examples are provided in the demo app:

You can also setup your own reactivity system using JSXHelper.onCreatingView callback. See how it's done in the mobx-setup module in the demo app.

Installation

npm install @nativescript-community/ui-jsx

Also, make sure to update the following:

  • tsconfig.json
{
  "compilerOptions": {
    "jsx": "react-jsx",
    "jsxImportSource": "@nativescript-community/ui-jsx"
  }
}
  • references.d.ts
/// <reference path="./node_modules/@nativescript-community/ui-jsx/index.d.ts" />

Usage

// A JSX component
export default function Counter() {
  let counter = 42;
  const counterLabel = <label text={`${counter} taps left`} class="h2 text-center" textWrap={true} />;

  function onTap() {
    if (counter <= 0) {
      counterLabel.text = 'Hoorraaay! You unlocked the NativeScript clicker achievement!';
    } else {
      counter--;
      counterLabel.text = `${counter} taps left`;
    }
  }

  return (
    <page class="page">
      <actionBar title="Counter" class="action-bar">
      </actionBar>
      <stackLayout class="p-20">
        <label text="Tap the button" class="h1 text-center"/>
        <button text="TAP" class="btn btn-primary" onTap={onTap}/>
        {counterLabel}
      </stackLayout>
    </page>
  );
}

Custom type configuration

The plugin allows extending types based on your preferences.
Supported configurations:

  • commonAttributeType | The additional return type for all jsx element attributes.

e.g.

import { IComputedValue, IObservableArray, IObservableValue } from 'mobx';

declare global {
	interface NativeScriptJSXTypeConfig<T> {
		commonAttributeType: IObservableValue<T> | IComputedValue<T> | IObservableArray<any>;
	}
}

Custom elements

The plugin also provides an API for adding custom elements:
TypeScript:

import { JSXHelper } from '@nativescript-community/ui-jsx';
import { CollectionView } from '@nativescript-community/ui-collectionview';

JSXHelper.registerElement('collectionView', CollectionView);

Typings:

import { CollectionView } from '@nativescript-community/ui-collectionview';
import { NativeScriptElement } from '@nativescript-community/ui-jsx';

export {};

declare global {
	interface NativeScriptJSX {
		collectionView: NativeScriptElement<CollectionView, typeof CollectionView>;
	}
}

HMR

The plugin was designed to make use of NativeScript core's builtin HMR handling, provided that certain rules are followed:

  • Navigating components must always export a default function that returns the Page instance
  • The component default function must be assigned to the navigation entry's create property

e.g.

Frame.topmost().navigate({
  create: MyCustomComponent
});
