Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@needless-ui/css

Framework-free component styles for Needless UI. Use them with the Angular package, or on their own in plain HTML.

Install

pnpm add @needless-ui/css
/* Everything: tokens plus every component. */
@import '@needless-ui/css';

Or pick components:

@import '@needless-ui/css/layers.css';
@import '@needless-ui/tokens/tokens.css';
@import '@needless-ui/css/presets.css';
@import '@needless-ui/css/components/button.css';

From a CDN:

<link
  rel="stylesheet"
  href="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/npm/@needless-ui/css/dist/needless-ui.min.css"
/>

Markup

<button class="nui-button">Save</button>
<button class="nui-button" data-variant="soft" data-tone="danger" data-size="sm">Delete</button>
<a class="nui-button" data-variant="outline" href="/docs">Docs</a>

<dialog class="nui-dialog" data-size="sm" aria-labelledby="delete-title">
  <h2 class="nui-dialog-title" id="delete-title">Delete project?</h2>
  <div class="nui-dialog-actions">
    <button class="nui-button" data-variant="soft" data-tone="neutral">Cancel</button>
    <button class="nui-button" data-tone="danger">Delete</button>
  </div>
</dialog>

<div class="nui-menu" role="menu" popover="manual">
  <div class="nui-menu-item" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1">Rename</div>
  <div class="nui-menu-separator" role="separator"></div>
  <div class="nui-menu-item" role="menuitem" tabindex="-1" data-tone="danger">Delete</div>
</div>

The CSS only styles these components. Without a framework package, open the dialog with showModal(), and give the menu its keyboard behavior yourself, following the menu button pattern.

Customization presets

Attributes on any element set how everything inside it moves and looks. The nearest one wins:

<body data-nui-motion="jelly" data-nui-press="squish" data-nui-enter="flip">
  <section data-nui-corners="squircle" data-nui-radius="large" data-nui-density="compact">
    …
  </section>
</body>

| Attribute | Presets | | ------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | data-nui-motion | snappy, bouncy, jelly, elastic, lazy, mechanical, none | | data-nui-press | sink, squish, pop, wobble, rubber, tilt, none | | data-nui-enter | zoom, fade, drop, rise, unfold, flip, swing, slide, none | | data-nui-corners | round, squircle, bevel, scoop, notch, square | | data-nui-radius | none, small, medium, large, full | | data-nui-density | compact, regular, roomy |

They only set custom properties (--nui-motion, --nui-press, --nui-enter, --nui-corner-shape, --nui-radius-scale, --nui-density), so CSS can set those to anything else. When picking components one by one, import @needless-ui/css/presets.css after the tokens.

Cascade layers

All styles live in @layer nui.tokens, nui.base, nui.components, nui.utilities, so any CSS you write outside a layer wins automatically. If your app has global resets such as a { color: inherit }, put them in a layer declared before nui, so they don't override components:

@layer reset, nui, app;

With Tailwind CSS v4, declare @layer theme, base, nui, components, utilities; before your imports so utility classes can override components.

Browser support

| Browser | From | | ----------------------------------------- | ------ | | Chrome and Edge, on computers and Android | 120 | | Firefox, on computers and Android | 125 | | Safari on Mac | 17 | | Every browser on iPhone and iPad | iOS 17 | | Samsung Internet | 25 |

Tested in Chromium, Firefox and WebKit, on computers and touch screens. Older browsers aren't supported: without the Popover API, menus, selects and popovers don't open. See the browser support guide.
