Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@nonnajs/vite-plugin

Vite plugin for @nonnajs/di - aliases the handful of Node.js builtins @nonnajs/di's published dist bundle statically imports to minimal, browser-safe shims, so a browser app (React, Vue, or anything else Vite bundles) can resolve @nonnajs/di at all.

License: MIT

The Problem

@nonnajs/di's default request-scope storage (AsyncLocalStorage, from node:async_hooks) and injector.loadBeans() (node:fs/promises, node:path, node:url) are Node-only features. Most browser apps never touch either - no runInScope()/request-scoped providers, .scan() instead of loadBeans() - but @nonnajs/di's published bundle still statically imports those four builtins (tsup's platform: "neutral" build strips the node: prefix, so both the bare and prefixed specifiers show up), and a real browser bundler like Rollup can't resolve either form on its own. Without this plugin, building @nonnajs/di into a browser bundle fails at bundle time with an unresolved-import error.

Installation

npm install --save-dev @nonnajs/vite-plugin

vite is a peer dependency - bring your own version (>=4).

Usage

// vite.config.ts
import {defineConfig} from "vite";
import {nonna} from "@nonnajs/vite-plugin";

export default defineConfig({
    plugins: [nonna()],
});

That's it - @nonnajs/di (and anything built on top of it, like @nonnajs/react or @nonnajs/vue) now bundles cleanly for the browser.

What The Shims Actually Do

None of the four shims provide real Node semantics - they exist purely so the bundler has something to resolve:

  • async_hooks - a minimal AsyncLocalStorage stand-in with single-slot run()/getStore(). Not real async-context isolation across concurrent calls. Only exercised if your app calls injector.runInScope() without supplying its own contextStorage.
  • fs/promises - a readFile() that always throws. Only exercised if your app calls injector.loadBeans().
  • path / url - minimal isAbsolute/dirname/resolve and pathToFileURL() implementations. Also only exercised by loadBeans().

If your app needs real request scoping in the browser, supply your own ContextStorage via Nonna.injector().withContextStorage(...) instead of relying on the shimmed default.

API

nonna(options?: NonnaPluginOptions): Plugin

  • options.shims?: NonnaShimName[] - which of "async_hooks" | "fs/promises" | "path" | "url" to shim. Defaults to all four; narrow this only if you've audited your app and know it never reaches the feature a given shim backs.
