Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.5.0

Published

Vlak React components for product exploration. Fixed visual rules, precompiled StyleX, and one stylesheet with no compiler to configure.

Readme

@noorddev/vlak-react

Vlak's React components. Precompiled StyleX on Vlak tokens: import the package and one stylesheet, no compiler to configure.

npm install @noorddev/vlak-react
import "@noorddev/vlak-react/css";
import { Button, Dialog, Field, Input } from "@noorddev/vlak-react";

The stylesheet carries the tokens, the page base, the type scale, and Vlak's component styles. Shipped files have enforced gzip budgets. Inter (SIL OFL 1.1) loads from the package; no Google Fonts request.

Dark scheme

Set data-theme="dark" on the root element. Without it the system preference applies.

Per-component imports

Every component is its own module, so bundlers drop what you do not use even without tree shaking:

import { Button } from "@noorddev/vlak-react/components/button";

Stateful components are marked "use client" and work in React Server Components trees.

Rich rendering uses optional subpaths: response-markdown, highlighted-code, jsx-preview, and workflow-canvas. Install the engines listed in each component's documentation. Markdown also needs katex/dist/katex.min.css; workflows need @noorddev/vlak-react/workflow.css. The root import does not load these engines. See the AI feature coverage and installation boundaries.

StyleX

The leaves are StyleX. If you already compile StyleX (Linear, Meta, and a growing set of apps do), write your own leaves against Vlak tokens:

import * as stylex from "@stylexjs/stylex";
import { vlak, mq } from "@noorddev/vlak-react/tokens.stylex";

const styles = stylex.create({
  panel: { borderTop: `1px solid ${vlak.divider}`, padding: vlak.pad, [mq.phone]: { padding: 12 } },
});

Or vendor the source instead of the build: npx @noorddev/vlak-cli add button copies the StyleX leaf into your project for your compiler to own.

Overriding

Everything ships inside cascade layers (vlak.tokens, vlak.base, vlak.type, vlak.components, vlak.touch, vlak.motion). Unlayered author CSS wins without !important:

.rs-btn-primary { border-radius: 8px; }

Accessibility

Native elements first: <dialog>, <details>, the Popover API, real inputs. Where the platform has nothing, the component follows the WAI-ARIA Authoring Practices pattern (listbox, menu, grid, tabs) with full keyboard support. Every interactive component has an axe test.

Requirements

React 18 or 19. The core package supports Node 18.18 or newer. The optional Markdown renderer requires Node 20 or newer in its build or server environment because Streamdown depends on Marked 17.
