@nspot/geo-pack-romania-historical
A geo-engine region pack: Romania's historical provinces, each the union of whole administrative units (UATs).
What's in it
All regions are type cultural, tag historic, with no parent but for the two parts of
Maramureș. The five groupings are also tagged grouping and record the provinces they are
made of in made_of. Each one's properties record what it is made of and why: built_from (the SIRUTA
codes of its UATs), source, confidence and notes.
| Slug | Region | Made of | Confidence |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| banat | Banat | 192 UATs: Timiș whole; Caraș-Severin but for Băuțar; Orșova, Eșelnița, Dubova and Svinița in Mehedinți; the 13 Arad UATs south of the Mureș | sourced |
| bucovina | Bucovina | 78 UATs of Suceava: 11 towns and 67 communes, Bucovina de Sud | sourced |
| crisana | Crișana | 245 UATs: Bihor whole; Arad north of the Mureș; in the north-west, the UATs of the interwar Sălaj: 45 in Sălaj, 25 in Satu Mare, 9 in Maramureș | sourced |
| dobrogea | Dobrogea | Every UAT of Constanța and Tulcea (121): the Romanian part, Dobrogea de Nord | sourced |
| maramures-provincie | Maramureș | 98 UATs: historic Maramureș with Sătmar, the UATs of the interwar județe of Maramureș and Satu Mare; 58 in Maramureș, 40 in Satu Mare | sourced |
| maramures-istoric | Maramureșul istoric, also Țara Maramureșului (parent maramures-provincie) | 36 UATs of Maramureș, the interwar county north of Gutâi and Țibleș | sourced |
| moldova | Moldova | 579 UATs: Botoșani, Galați, Iași and Vaslui whole; Bacău but for Ghimeș-Făget; Neamț but for Bicaz-Chei, Bicazu Ardelean and Dămuc; Suceava outside Bucovina; Vrancea north of the Milcov | sourced |
| muntenia | Muntenia | 842 UATs: Argeș, Brăila, Buzău, Călărași, Dâmbovița, Giurgiu, Ialomița, Ilfov, Prahova and București's six sectors whole; Teleorman but for Islaz; Olt and Vâlcea east of the Olt; Vrancea south of the Milcov; Predeal and Fundata | sourced |
| oltenia | Oltenia | 377 UATs: Dolj and Gorj; Mehedinți but for Orșova's corner; Olt and Vâlcea west of the Olt; Islaz in Teleorman | sourced |
| satmar | Sătmar (parent maramures-provincie) | 62 UATs, the interwar county of Satu Mare without the Carei and Tășnad corner: 40 in Satu Mare, 22 in Maramureș | editorial |
| transilvania | Transilvania | 654 UATs: Alba, Bistrița-Năsăud, Cluj, Covasna, Harghita, Hunedoara, Mureș and Sibiu whole; Brașov but for Predeal and Fundata; eastern Sălaj, the Lăpuș area, Ghimeș-Făget, the Bicaz communes and Băuțar | sourced |
The groupings, each the union of whole provinces:
| Slug | Region | Made of | Confidence |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| tara-romaneasca | Țara Românească | Muntenia and Oltenia (1,219 UATs) | sourced |
| moldova-mare | Moldova în sens larg | Moldova and Bucovina (657) | sourced |
| transilvania-mare | Transilvania în sens larg | Transilvania, Banat, Crișana and Maramureș (1,189) | sourced |
| vechiul-regat | Vechiul Regat | Muntenia, Oltenia, Moldova and Dobrogea (1,919) | sourced |
| partium | Partium | Crișana and Maramureș (343) | sourced |
They overlap one another (Vechiul Regat holds Țara Românească), so they are not parents of the provinces; a point lies in its province and in every grouping that holds it. Partium is the modern Hungarian and German sense; Vechiul Regat is Romania before 1918 within today's borders, without the Cadrilater.
Oltenia (new in 1.1.0) follows the plan's convention: the frontiers before 1918 and the river Olt, resolved to whole UATs. Each UAT of a split county goes to the 1930 county that held its seat village, checked against the old county its commune article names. So Orșova, Eșelnița, Dubova and Svinița are Banat, Islaz is Oltenia, and Câineni goes to Muntenia with its seat (Câinenii Mari, across the Olt, was in Vâlcea). Eight UATs near the Olt are decided by their seat alone and are listed for review in the project: Ilovița, Băbiciu, Pleșoiu, Brezoi, Călimănești, Drăgășani, Prundeni and Voicești.
Banat (new in 1.5.0) is the Romanian part: Timiș, Caraș-Severin but for Băuțar (which is Transilvania), Orșova and its three neighbours in Mehedinți, and the Arad UATs south of the Mureș, the line the plan takes there: Lipova, Bata, Birchiș, Fântânele, Felnac, Frumușeni, Șagu, Secusigiu, Șiștarovăț, Ususău, Vinga, Zăbrani and Zădăreni. The quarters of Arad south of the river, and Banat villages of Bârzava, Conop, Săvârșin and Zam, go with their UATs to Crișana and Transilvania.
Maramureș (new in 1.7.0) is the plan's first-level province: historic Maramureș with
Sătmar, the UATs whose seat was in the interwar județe of Maramureș or Satu Mare. Its slug is
maramures-provincie, since maramures is the județ. It has two parts, each a region of its
own with it as parent. Maramureșul istoric is the land north of the Gutâi and Țibleș, the
36 UATs of the interwar county: 3,376 km², against the 3,381 km² that county is given. It is
also the ethnographic Țara Maramureșului, so since 1.10.0 it carries the tag ethnographic
and that name in also_known_as: the 62 villages G. Ștef's Maramureș dialect dictionary
assigns to the țară lie in exactly these 36 UATs.
Sătmar is the rest, 62 UATs from Satu Mare and Oaș to Baia Mare and Chioar. It is
editorial: the older Sătmar, the comitat without the Baia Mare and Oaș mountain areas, has no
line that resolves to UATs, so the interwar county stands in for it. Seven UATs are decided
by their seat alone near a line and are listed for review: Fărcașa, Mireșu Mare and Valea
Chioarului in Maramureș, Beltiug, Craidorolț, Doba and Terebești in Satu Mare.
Crișana (new in 1.6.0) is the Romanian part: Bihor, Arad north of the Mureș, and in the north-west, where the plan lets the 1930 county lines decide, the UATs whose seat was in the interwar județ of Sălaj: 45 of today's Sălaj (the rest is Transilvania), 25 of Satu Mare, Carei and Tășnad among them, and 9 of Maramureș, Ulmeni and Băsești among them (the rest of both is Maramureș). Thirteen UATs are decided by their seat alone near a line and are listed for review: Nădlac, Păuliș, Semlac, Șeitin and Vărădia de Mureș on the Arad side; Acâș, Bârsău, Băbeni, Cristolț, Bicaz, Gârdani, Sălsig and Ulmeni in the north-west, where no article names the old county.
Bucovina (new in 1.4.0) is the Romanian part, Bucovina de Sud: exactly the 11 towns and 67 communes of Suceava that ro.wikipedia's list of Bucovina localities names. Where the 1775-1918 border runs through a UAT, the UAT goes whole to its seat's side: the Burdujeni quarter of Suceava, Pădureni (Siret), Mitocași and Racova and Știrbăț are in, while Bucovina villages of Bunești, Cornu Luncii, Dorna-Arini, Șaru Dornei, Mihăileni and Cândești are in Moldova with their communes. Coșna and Dornișoara, which one source says were administered with Transilvania, are kept here as the list has them.
Moldova (new in 1.3.0) is the part of the old principality that was never Bucovina (Moldova Occidentală). Ghimeș-Făget and the three Bicaz communes were Transylvanian and are left out. In Suceava, Dorna-Arini, Panaci, Șaru Dornei and Verești are in it: they were in the Moldovan counties of Fălticeni (later Baia) and Botoșani, though the 1930 outline puts their seats in Bucovina. Vulturu, by the Milcov, is decided by its seat alone and is listed for review.
Muntenia (new in 1.2.0) is made the same way. București is in it as its six sectors, the units ANCPI draws. Focșani goes to Moldova with its seat, so the former Focșanii Munteni, south of the Milcov, is left out; Câineni comes in with its seat Câinenii Mici. Fundata, Vulturești, Ipotești and Racovița are decided by their seat alone near a line and are listed for review.
Transilvania (redone in 1.8.0) is Transilvania proper, the principality inside the Carpathians, made like the others from the table of every UAT's province. Until 1.8.0 it was an interim approximation, the nine whole județe mostly in it. Now it has 654 UATs:
- Brașov loses Predeal and Fundata, which were in Muntenia.
- It gains the Transylvanian parts of the neighbouring județe: 16 UATs of eastern Sălaj (the interwar Someș), Târgu Lăpuș and eight neighbours in Maramureș, Ghimeș-Făget in Bacău, Bicaz-Chei, Bicazu Ardelean and Dămuc in Neamț, and Băuțar in Caraș-Severin.
No UAT of Suceava or Vâlcea is in it: Coșna is on Bucovina's list, and no Vâlcea UAT has its seat north of the Lotru. Boiu Mare, Vima Mică and Hida are decided by their seat alone near a line and are listed for review. With it, the nine provinces cover Romania, each UAT in exactly one.
Until 1.x of @nspot/geo-pack-romania,
both regions were in that pack, Transilvania as ten județe including Sălaj. Upgrade the
Romania pack to 2.0.0 before installing this one: a pack never overwrites a region another
pack owns.
The boundaries are ANCPI's of 2025-03-24, simplified at 50 m, so each region nests exactly
in the communes of
@nspot/geo-pack-romania-uat
and the județe of the Romania pack.
