Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Windows desktop notifications for Pi (local fork with HiDPI / DPI-aware fix)

pi-notifier

License: MIT Platform: Windows Fork Pi Package

Local fork of @steven-rothwell/pi-notifier with a HiDPI / DPI-aware toast fix for high-scaling Windows displays.

Windows desktop notifications for Pi. Get notified when the agent finishes, when API errors occur, or when tools fail — without leaving your current window.

Contents

Features

  • Agent Finished - Know when Pi is ready for your next input
  • Provider Error - Instant alerts for HTTP 4xx/5xx errors (rate limits, auth failures, etc.)
  • Tool Error - Get notified when any tool execution fails
  • Focus Detection - Notifications are suppressed when Pi's terminal is the foreground window
  • Custom Sounds - Choose from 13 Windows system sounds or disable sounds per notification type
  • Dark/Light Theme - Stylish toast popups with a modern look

Install (local path)

pi install ./packages/pi-notifier

Or load without installing, for a single session:

pi -e ./packages/pi-notifier/notifier.ts

Restart Pi after installing.

Configure

Run /notifier in Pi's TUI to toggle per type, change sounds, switch theme, and test.

Settings are stored in ~/.pi/notifier.json:

{
  "theme": "dark",
  "notifications": {
    "agentFinished": { "enabled": true, "sound": "C:\\Windows\\Media\\Windows Notify Messaging.wav" },
    "providerError": { "enabled": true, "sound": "C:\\Windows\\Media\\Windows Error.wav" },
    "toolError":     { "enabled": true, "sound": "C:\\Windows\\Media\\Windows Exclamation.wav" }
  }
}

Requirements

  • Windows - Uses PowerShell and WinForms for native notifications
  • Pi - Requires @earendil-works/pi-coding-agent and @earendil-works/pi-tui

How It Works

Hooks three Pi events:

  1. agent_end - agent finished, waiting for input
  2. after_provider_response - HTTP 4xx/5xx from AI providers
  3. tool_execution_end - tool execution failed (isError: true)

Before showing, checks if Pi's terminal is the foreground window; if so, the notification is skipped.

Local testing

Quick ways to verify a change:

# single session, no install — exit to unload
pi -e ./packages/pi-notifier/notifier.ts

# or install persistently (restart Pi after)
pi install ./packages/pi-notifier

Then in Pi's TUI run /notifier to toggle per type, switch theme, pick sounds, and fire test toasts without waiting for a real event.

For real-flow checks: let the agent finish (agentFinished), trigger a 4xx/5xx (providerError), or force a tool failure (toolError).

Note: toasts are suppressed when Pi's terminal is in the foreground. Switch away from the terminal, or rely on the /notifier manual trigger.
