Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Terminal-based Kahoot replacement

Readme

term-quiz

A terminal-based Kahoot replacement. Run live quizzes from your command line.

Install

npm install
npm run build
npm link

Usage

Create a quiz

quiz --build

Follow the prompts to add questions and answer choices (A–D), then mark the correct answer. Quizzes are saved to ~/.term-quiz/quizzes/.

Host a quiz

quiz --host "My Quiz Title"

Or build and host in one step:

quiz --build --host

A 7-letter code is generated and a public tunnel is opened via localtunnel. Share the code with participants — they don't need to be on your network.

┌─────────────────────────────┐
│ Join code: │
│ ABCXYZ │
│ │
│ quiz --join ABCXYZ │
└─────────────────────────────┘

Once at least one player joins, press S or Space to start.

Join a quiz

quiz --join ABCXYZ

Enter your name and wait for the host to start. When a question appears, press A, B, C, or D to answer. Faster correct answers earn more points (100–1000).

Same-machine / local network (no tunnel)

If the tunnel is unavailable, the lobby will show LOCAL ONLY — ws://localhost:<port>. Participants on the same machine can join with:

quiz --join ABCXYZ --port <port>

How it works

Host machine Participant machines
─────────────────────────────────────────────────────────
quiz --host "My Quiz"
  │
├─ starts WebSocket server (port ~3456)
  ├─ opens localtunnel → abcxyz.loca.lt
  └─ displays code: ABCXYZ
                                    quiz --join ABCXYZ
                                      │
                                      └─ connects to wss://abcxyz.loca.lt
  • The 7-letter code is the tunnel subdomain — no IP addresses needed
  • Participants connect directly through the tunnel to the host's machine
  • The host controls pacing: advance to the next question by pressing N or Space
  • Results appear automatically once everyone has answered

Quiz flow

  1. Host creates and shares the code
  2. Participants join and see the lobby
  3. Host presses S to start
  4. Each question appears on everyone's screen simultaneously
  5. After all participants answer, the leaderboard updates
  6. Host advances to the next question
  7. Final leaderboard shown at the end
