Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Ontario.ca Jamstack Toolkit

The Ontario.ca Jamstack Toolkit is a command-line interface (CLI) tool that streamlines the creation and management of Jamstack projects for Ontario.ca. Inspired by tools like Create React App and built on top of Eleventy, the toolkit provides a simple and efficient starting point for building accessible, performant, and scalable websites using the Eleventy static site generator.

Features

  • Simple to use: A single command creates and configures a new project structure with sensible defaults and best practices in place.
  • Automated project scaffolding: Generates all necessary files, from configs to templates, to get you up and running quickly.
  • Built-in development server: A built-in development server with live reloading allows you to preview your site as you work.
  • Ontario.ca Design System: The toolkit comes pre-configured with the Ontario.ca Design System and the Ontario.ca Branding Kit.
  • Ontario.ca standards: Templating and styling designed to meet the guidelines and standards for Ontario.ca.
  • Internationalization support: Tools and structures to support English and French language sites, allowing for seamless content delivery across languages.

Getting started

Prerequisites

  • Node.js (version 12 or higher)
  • npm (version 6 or higher)

Installation

Install the toolkit globally using npm:

npm install -g @ontario-digital-service/ontarioca-toolkit-core

Creating a new application

To create a new app, use the create-ontario-app command followed by the project name:

create-ontario-app my-ontario-project

This will create a new directory called my-ontario-project, scaffold the project, set up all necessary files and configuration, initialize git, and install all necessary dependencies.

For more information on the setup, visit the Getting Started guide.

Running the development server

To run the development server, use the serve command:

cd my-ontario-project
npm run serve

This will start the development server on port 8080. You can then view your site at http://localhost:8080.

Building for production

To build your site for production, use the build command:

cd my-ontario-project
npm run build

This will build your site and output the static files to the dist directory.
