Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@open-hax/kanban

Standalone markdown kanban tooling with a direct Trello sync path.

What This Replaces

  • No dependency on @promethean-os/kanban
  • No shelling out to pnpm kanban
  • No hardcoded Trello board id
  • Card sync keyed by task UUID instead of title

Commands

pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban build
pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban test
pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban exec node dist/cli.js --help

Local web UI

pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban build
pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban exec node dist/cli.js serve --tasks-dir ./tasks --port 8787
# open http://127.0.0.1:8787

Drag cards between columns to update their status: frontmatter (and, when using a tasks/<status>/ folder tree, files will be moved to the matching status folder when safe).

Multi-project web UI

The server also accepts a config with a projects array. The React UI renders a small project selector and all API routes accept ?project=<id>.

{
  "defaultProject": "knoxx",
  "projects": [
    {
      "id": "knoxx",
      "title": "Knoxx",
      "tasksDir": "../../orgs/open-hax/openplanner/packages/agents/knoxx/kanban"
    }
  ]
}

Run it through the eta-mu beta CLI when operating boards from the workspace:

eta-mu-beta kanban serve --config services/eta-mu/kanban/openhax.kanban.json --port 8791
eta-mu-beta kanban count --tasks-dir orgs/open-hax/openplanner/packages/agents/knoxx/kanban

Trello Setup

  1. Copy packages/kanban/.env.example values into your environment.
  2. Build the package.
  3. Run a dry-run sync first.
pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban build
pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban exec node dist/cli.js sync trello \
  --config packages/kanban/examples/ussyverse.promethean.kanban.json \
  --dry-run

The bundled example targets https://trello.com/b/Mu2BmeDE/ussyverse and reads tasks from orgs/riatzukiza/promethean/docs/agile/tasks.

Config

Create openhax.kanban.json or pass --config <path>.

{
  "tasksDir": "docs/agile/tasks",
  "boardFile": ".kanban/board.json",
  "trello": {
    "boardUrl": "https://trello.com/b/Mu2BmeDE/ussyverse",
    "archiveMissing": false,
    "listMapping": {
      "in_progress": "Doing"
    }
  }
}

CLI

pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban snapshot -- --tasks-dir docs/agile/tasks --out .kanban/board.json
pnpm --filter @open-hax/kanban sync:trello -- --board-url https://trello.com/b/Mu2BmeDE/ussyverse --tasks-dir docs/agile/tasks

Notes

  • Task files are regular markdown files with YAML frontmatter.
  • Supported task metadata includes uuid, title, status, priority, labels, and tags.
  • Trello authentication uses classic TRELLO_API_KEY and TRELLO_API_TOKEN.
