Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@open-pencil/design-jsx

OpenPencil design JSX: build editable scene trees with <Frame>, <Text>, and the other elements, style them with paint and effect helpers and design variables, and export scene nodes back to JSX.

Set the JSX import source in tsconfig.json ("jsx": "react-jsx", "jsxImportSource": "@open-pencil/design-jsx") or per file:

/** @jsxImportSource @open-pencil/design-jsx */
import { renderTree } from '@open-pencil/core/design-jsx'
import { Frame, Text, solid } from '@open-pencil/design-jsx'
import { SceneGraph } from '@open-pencil/scene-graph'

const graph = new SceneGraph()
await renderTree(
  graph,
  <Frame w={320} p={16} fill={solid('#FFFFFF')}>
    <Text>Hello</Text>
  </Frame>
)

JSX written as a string, as agents and the MCP render tool send it, needs no build step:

import { renderJSX } from '@open-pencil/core/design-jsx'

await renderJSX(graph, '<Frame w={320} p={16} bg="#FFFFFF"><Text>Hello</Text></Frame>')

Inside <Text>, <Span> styles some of its characters and <Paragraph> writes its paragraphs and list items:

<Text size={16}>
  <Paragraph spacing={8}>Hello <Span weight="bold" color="#EE2222">world</Span></Paragraph>
  <Paragraph list="ordered">First</Paragraph>
  <Paragraph list="ordered" level={2}>Nested</Paragraph>
</Text>

Components that behave as controls are written with Reka UI's element names, in TSX (import Switch, Slider, Tabs, and the other namespaces, typed with their behaviour props) or in strings, and export writes them back the same way:

<Switch.Root name="Switch" modelValue="State">
  <Component name="State=Off" w={44} h={24}><Switch.Thumb x={2} y={2} w={20} h={20} /></Component>
  <Component name="State=On" w={44} h={24}><Switch.Thumb x={22} y={2} w={20} h={20} /></Component>
</Switch.Root>

This package depends only on @open-pencil/scene-graph and @open-pencil/emit. Rendering needs icons, SVG conversion, and layout, which @open-pencil/core/design-jsx provides; other engines can supply their own through createDesignJSXRenderer(services).
