Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Flipt Web Provider

Flipt is an open source developer friendly feature flagging solution, that allows for easy management and fast feature evaluation.

This provider is an implementation on top of the official Flipt Browser Client Side SDK.

The main difference between this provider and @openfeature/flipt-provider is that it uses a static evaluation context.
This provider is more sustainable for client-side implementation.

If you want to know more about this pattern, we encourage you to read this blog post.

Installation

npm install @openfeature/web-sdk @openfeature/flipt-web-provider

Usage

To initialize the OpenFeature client with Flipt, you can use the following code snippet:

import { FliptWebProvider } from '@openfeature/flipt-web';

const provider = new FliptWebProvider('namespace-of-choice', { url: 'http://your.upstream.flipt.host' });
await OpenFeature.setProviderAndWait(provider);

After the provider gets initialized, you can start evaluations of feature flags like so:

const evaluationCtx: EvaluationContext = {
  targetingKey: 'myentity',
  email: '[email protected]',
};

// Set the static context for OpenFeature
await OpenFeature.setContext(evaluationCtx);

// Attach the provider to OpenFeature
const client = await OpenFeature.getClient();

// You can now use the client to evaluate your flags
const details = client.getStringDetails('my-feature', 'default');

Available Options

You can pass the following options to the FliptWebProvider constructor:

| Option name | Type | Default | Description | | -------------- | ------ | ----------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | url | string | http://localhost:8080 | URL where your Flipt server is located. | | authentication | object | | (optional) If Flipt is configured to authenticate the requests, you should provide an authentication object to the provider. See: FliptWebProviderAuthentication |

Evaluation Context Transformation

OpenFeature standardizes the evaluation context to include a targetingKey, and some other additional arbitrary properties that each provider can use fit for their use case.

For Flipt, we translate the targetingKey as the entityId, and the rest of the OpenFeature evaluation context as the context in Flipt vernacular. You can find the meaning of those two words here in our API docs.

For example, an OpenFeature Evaluation context that has this structure:

{
  "targetingKey": "my-targeting-id",
  "email": "[email protected]",
  "userId": "this-very-long-user-id"
}

will get transformed to the following for Flipt:

{
  "entityId": "my-targeting-id",
  "context": {
    "email": "[email protected]",
    "userId": "this-very-long-user-id"
  }
}

Building

Run nx package providers-flipt-web to build the library.

Running unit tests

Run nx test providers-flipt-web to execute the unit tests via Jest.
