Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

TypeScript SDK for SAPIENT — talk to a local `sapient serve` from Node.js or React Native, with streaming chat

TypeScript SDK for SAPIENT — run LLMs on your own hardware and talk to them from Node.js or React Native.

Today the SDK speaks to a local sapient serve instance over its OpenAI-compatible HTTP API (streaming included). A native Node binding (napi) and a React Native JSI module over sapient-ffi are the next rungs — same API, no server process. See docs/MOBILE.md for the Phase-11 plan.

Install & run

# 1. Start the engine (any machine on your network; keeps running)
# listens on 127.0.0.1:11435
sapient serve
# 2. In your app (another terminal)
npm install @openhorizon-labs/sapient
import { SapientClient } from '@openhorizon-labs/sapient';

const client = new SapientClient(); // http://127.0.0.1:11435

// Whole reply at once
const { content } = await client.chat(
  [{ role: 'user', content: 'One-sentence fun fact about octopuses?' }],
  'qwen2.5-0.5b',
);

// Or streamed token-by-token
for await (const token of client.chatStream(
  [{ role: 'user', content: 'Tell me a haiku.' }],
  'qwen2.5-0.5b',
  { maxTokens: 64, temperature: 0.7 },
)) {
  process.stdout.write(token);
}

The first request for a model downloads + loads it server-side (Ollama-style lazy loading) — expect the first call to take a while.

React Native

Point the client at your dev machine and it works out of the box for non-streamed calls:

const client = new SapientClient({ baseUrl: 'http://192.168.1.42:11435' });

RN's built-in fetch cannot stream response bodies. For chatStream(), pass a streaming-capable fetch (e.g. expo/fetch):

import { fetch } from 'expo/fetch';
const client = new SapientClient({ baseUrl: 'http://192.168.1.42:11435', fetch });

This dev-loop keeps inference off your phone entirely while you build UI — see the safe-testing guide in docs/MOBILE.md.

API

  • new SapientClient({ baseUrl?, fetch?, headers? })
  • chat(messages, model, { maxTokens?, temperature?, topP?, stop?, signal? }) → { content, model, finishReason, usage }
  • chatStream(messages, model, options?) → AsyncGenerator<string> — break or abort the signal to cancel generation
  • models() → catalog/resident models (/v1/models)
  • health() → liveness + resident-model report (/v1/health)
  • Non-2xx responses throw SapientHttpError (status, body)

Develop

npm install
# builds with tsc, then runs node --test (SSE units + a mock-serve integration suite)
npm test

Zero runtime dependencies; Node ≥ 18.
