Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Explore and manage OPFS VFS volumes with file previews, a shell, and debugging tools.

OPFS VFS Volume Explorer

Explore and manage real OPFS VFS volumes, with opt-in developer tools for debugging running applications. Automatic same-origin discovery, passive application attachments, independent workers for recognized closed volumes, file actions, a write-gated just-bash terminal, shared previews and a virtualized source editor.

if (import.meta.env.DEV) {
  await import('@opfs-vfs/devtools/styles.css');
  const { mountDevtools } = await import('@opfs-vfs/devtools');
  const panel = mountDevtools();
  import.meta.hot?.dispose(() => panel.unmount());
}

Drag the launcher to snap it to any corner or edge center. Release animates to the nearest position, respecting reduced-motion preferences. Alt + arrow keys cycle positions. initialPosition accepts top-left, top-center, top-right, right-center, bottom-right (default), bottom-center, bottom-left, or left-center.

While the panel is open and the page is visible, the current folder refreshes 500 ms after each completed read. Reads include immediate children only; unchanged previews and unsaved drafts are preserved. Use Refresh for a full-volume scan, including nested search results. No subscriptions plugin is required.

The standard application worker must support observer protocol 1. Requires a secure cross-origin-isolated browser context. No volume prop or application registration is needed. Older/custom/direct workers remain unavailable while busy. Protected volumes require their application.

Writes start disabled. Choose Enable writes below the volume selector to enable file creation, editing, and shell commands that modify the selected volume. An owner loss invalidates the attachment and clears write access; uncertain mutations are never replayed. Passive detach does not close or flush the app worker. Devtools-owned workers remain alive for the page lifetime because other application clients may attach to them.

File actions refuse overwrites, editor saves reject concurrent content changes, and cut/paste is limited to one volume. ZIP import creates a new volume; export is a live copy. Multi-entry errors can leave partial output. Previews/read/write calls are limited to 16 MiB per file; ZIP limits are 2,000 entries, 256 MiB expanded and 128 MiB compressed.

See the usage guide, preview extension guide, and implementation specification.

Volume details → OPFS volume size shows the sum of the volume's data, metadata, and journal file lengths, with a readable unit and exact byte count. Discovery updates it while the panel is open, even without a connection; Refresh also updates it. This measures OPFS backing files, not browser-wide quota usage or the sum of visible file contents. Changes buffered in memory are excluded, and live writes can change the total during measurement. An unavailable size is never shown as zero.

Development

Build the core and file-preview workspaces first. pnpm --filter @opfs-vfs/devtools storybook serves port 4326 with isolation headers. The Real Storage story uses a real application worker and creates disposable, persistent OPFS test volumes. Other stories use in-memory fixtures for layout, owner states, previews and file actions. The UI and CSS are shared; memory fixtures are not part of the public entry's dependency graph.

Run pnpm --filter @opfs-vfs/devtools test, test:browser, typecheck, build, and build-storybook for the relevant checks. Browser tests use Chromium and real OPFS.
