Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v1.0.0

Published

Auto-names pi sessions with concise, human-readable titles so `pi --resume` shows real descriptions instead of raw first messages. Never overwrites manual names, refreshes as topics evolve, and backfills old unnamed sessions.

pi-auto-session-name

A pi extension that gives every session a short, human-readable name so pi --resume shows a real description instead of the raw first message (which often starts with <system-reminder> context blobs and is useless for finding anything).

Features

  • Automatic naming — after the first agent run settles, asks the model for a concise one-line title (up to ~14 words / 100 chars) summarizing the session, stored via pi.setSessionName().
  • Stays current — refreshes the title every 8 user messages, so long-lived sessions stay findable as the topic evolves.
  • Backfills old sessions — resuming an old unnamed session names it from existing history, gradually fixing your backlog as you open sessions.
  • Never clobbers manual names — names set via /name, pi --name, or RPC are detected and respected, both in-process and across restarts (via a persisted ownership marker).
  • Graceful fallback — if the model call fails, falls back to a cleaned + truncated version of the first user message.
  • Cheap mode — use a smaller model for title generation via PI_AUTONAME_MODEL.

Install

# from npm (shows up on the pi package gallery)
pi install npm:@optomatica/pi-auto-session-name

# from git
pi install git:github.com/Optomatica/pi-auto-session-name

Or try it without installing:

pi -e npm:@optomatica/pi-auto-session-name

Usage

The extension works automatically — just start (or resume) a session and it gets named.

Commands:

  • /autoname — regenerate the title now
  • /autoname <text> — set a custom title (stops auto-renaming for this session)

Configuration

| Env var | Default | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | PI_AUTONAME_MODEL | active model | provider/model-id to use a specific (e.g. cheaper) model for title generation | | PI_AUTONAME_DEBUG | unset | set to 1 to log debug output to stderr |
