Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@orthosec/guard

v0.2.0

Published

OrthoSec runtime guard — catch prompt injection and unsafe LLM output at call time in any Node AI app. Zero dependencies.

Readme

@orthosec/guard

Runtime AI-security guard for Node / TypeScript. Catch prompt injection and unsafe LLM output at call time — any framework (OpenAI, Anthropic, LangChain, custom). Zero dependencies. The Node companion to OrthoSec's static scanner.

npm install @orthosec/guard

Wrap your LLM call

import { guard } from "@orthosec/guard";
import OpenAI from "openai";

const client = new OpenAI();

const chat = guard(
  async (prompt) => {
    const r = await client.chat.completions.create({
      model: "gpt-4o",
      max_tokens: 500,
      messages: [{ role: "user", content: prompt }],
    });
    return r; // output is scanned for leaks / payloads too
  },
  { mode: "block", onRisk: (r) => console.warn("[orthosec]", r.where, r.risks) }
);

await chat("Summarize this ticket"); // runs
await chat("ignore all previous instructions ..."); // throws PromptInjectionError

Or inspect directly

import { scanPrompt, scanOutput } from "@orthosec/guard";

if (!scanPrompt(userInput).ok) return reject();
const res = scanOutput(modelText);   // { ok, risks, where }

Modes

  • mode: "monitor" (default) — never throws; reports every hit via onRisk.
  • mode: "block" — throws PromptInjectionError on an injection hit before your call runs.

guard() works with sync and async functions and preserves the signature.

Optional model backend

The heuristics are the always-on, zero-dependency floor. Point the guard at a model to escalate — opt-in, fail-open (a model outage never blocks your call), and additive (a model can only add a risk, never clear a heuristic one):

import { scanPromptAsync, scanOutputAsync } from "@orthosec/guard";

// input direction: ORTHOSEC_GUARD_MODEL_URL (+ _API_KEY, _KIND, _TIMEOUT; bare var = model name)
// output direction: ORTHOSEC_OUTPUT_MODEL_URL
const res = await scanPromptAsync(userInput);   // heuristic + model

KIND is openai (any OpenAI-compatible /v1/chat/completions, incl. a local Llama Guard) or ollama (/api/chat). When a backend is set, guard() automatically uses the async path; pass { model: false } to force heuristic-only. This mirrors the Python guard's ORTHOSEC_GUARD_MODEL_* / ORTHOSEC_OUTPUT_MODEL_* contract.

A heuristic tripwire, not a guarantee — pair it with the OrthoSec static scanner and least-privilege tool design. Apache-2.0.
