Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@ousia/indus-code — Claude-Code-level AI coding agent

Package name: @ousia/indus-code · Binaries: indus, indus-code, indus-server, indus-mcp

Install

# Global install — gives you all four binaries
npm install -g @ousia/indus-code

# Or one-shot, no install
npx @ousia/indus-code "fix the bug in app.py"

What each command does

| Command | What it does | |---|---| | indus | Thin chat REPL. Streams a model response. One-shot if you pass a prompt, REPL if you don't. | | indus-code | The full coding agent — TUI, local tools, worktree, sub-agents, retry, MCP. | | indus-server | Local HTTP daemon (for IDE integration or indus-code --connect). | | indus-mcp | Exposes the agent as a Model Context Protocol server. |

Quickstart

# Set a provider key (NVIDIA gives free credits)
export INDUS_NVIDIA_API_KEY=nvapi-...

# One-shot: ask a question
indus "what is 2+2?"

# REPL: chat interactively
indus

# Full coding agent
indus-code "refactor the auth module"
indus-code # TUI

# Run a local daemon and connect
indus-server --port 7333 --workspace .
indus-code --connect http://127.0.0.1:7333 "fix the failing test"

# Expose as MCP (works with Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc.)
indus-mcp

Features

  • TUI (prompt_toolkit + rich) with live token streaming
  • Local tools — list_files, read_file, write_file, edit_file, search_code, run_command, apply_patch, web_fetch
  • Sub-agents — research / edit / review roles, parallel asyncio.gather dispatch
  • Worktree isolation — every change is a real git worktree, easy to discard
  • INDUS.md memory — project-aware context
  • Provider-agnostic — talks to NVIDIA, Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Groq, Together, Mistral, Cohere, Perplexity, Fireworks, DeepSeek, xAI, AI21, plus Hermes (control plane), OpenHands, MonkeyCode
  • MCP — exposes the agent as a Model Context Protocol server
  • Resilient — bounded exponential backoff with jitter, time-context injection, scoped tool registration, code-mode for nested tool dispatch

Configuration

Set provider API keys via environment variables. Indus resolves them through a layered credential provider (env → encrypted store → settings) so rotations take effect on the next request.

export INDUS_NVIDIA_API_KEY=nvapi-...
export INDUS_ANTHROPIC_API_KEY=sk-ant-...
export INDUS_OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-...
export INDUS_HERMES_API_KEY=hk-... # control plane

Inside the TUI

  • Type a message and press Enter
  • Ctrl-C to interrupt
  • /help for slash commands
  • /compact to summarise the conversation
  • /resume to load a saved session

Why a Node wrapper?

The agent itself is Python (FastAPI + the indus_cli package). This npm package is a thin shim that:

  1. Ensures Python 3.10+ is available on the system.
  2. On first run, installs the indus-cli Python package via pip (PyPI) or git+https.
  3. Forwards all indus / indus-code arguments to the right Python entry point.

If you'd rather install the Python package directly:

pipx install indus-cli
indus-code
