Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Overview

@owdproject/kit-explorer provides shared explorer behavior and headless components for themes, including:

  • tabs management
  • breadcrumb/address bar base
  • chrome band base
  • view mode switch base

Relationship to kit-fs

At runtime this module automatically registers @owdproject/kit-fs (filesystem UI primitives: KitFs* components, selectable area, composables). You normally do not list kit-fs again under defineDesktopConfig({ modules }) when kit-explorer is already included—unless you rely on kit-fs without kit-explorer (see below).

  • kit-fs — explorer filesystem UI layer (KitFs* building blocks)
  • kit-explorer — shared explorer behavior and headless chrome on top of that layer

Installation

pnpm desktop add @owdproject/kit-explorer

If your theme or app imports KitFs* components or paths under @owdproject/kit-fs directly, also add @owdproject/kit-fs to package.json so TypeScript and the bundler can resolve those imports. The Nuxt module for kit-fs still loads once via kit-explorer.

Usage

Desktop config (desktop.config.ts)

Minimal stack for an explorer-enabled desktop:

export default defineDesktopConfig({
  modules: [
    '@owdproject/module-fs',
    '@owdproject/kit-explorer',
  ],
})

@owdproject/module-fs mounts the virtual filesystem; kit-explorer pulls in kit-fs for you.

Theme packages (module.ts)

Themes that ship their own Explorer UI (instead of only consuming @owdproject/app-explorer) usually:

  1. Add @owdproject/kit-explorer and, if templates import primitives directly, @owdproject/kit-fs to the theme package.json.

  2. In the theme module.ts, when @owdproject/module-fs is enabled, call:

    await installModule('@owdproject/kit-explorer')

    Do not duplicate installModule('@owdproject/kit-fs') unless you need kit-fs without kit-explorer; otherwise kit-explorer already installs it.

Visual styling stays in the theme; generic interaction patterns stay in kit-explorer / kit-fs.

Integration notes

  • Keep theme-specific visuals in the theme package.
  • Keep generic explorer interactions in kit-explorer (and filesystem UI primitives in kit-fs).
  • Use useExplorerTabs() from @owdproject/kit-explorer/runtime/composables/useExplorerTabs.

Apps that only use kit-fs

Example: @owdproject/app-explorer registers kit-fs alone because it does not use kit-explorer. In that case list or installModule('@owdproject/kit-fs') only.
