Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.1.3

Published

CoinDesk Data (formerly CryptoCompare / CCData) MCP.

Readme

@pipeworx/cryptocompare

CoinDesk Data (formerly CryptoCompare / CCData) MCP — crypto prices, OHLC history, social stats, news.

Part of Pipeworx — an MCP gateway connecting AI agents to 1686+ live data sources.

The vendor renamed twice: developers.ccdata.io 301s to developers.coindesk.com, and min-api's own 401 body points callers there. The legacy data host min-api.cryptocompare.com still serves and is what this pack calls; data-api.coindesk.com is the current host.

BYOK-only since 2026-09-30 (fleet #2444). The shared platform key was permanently over quota — every tool authenticated but returned the vendor body "You are over your rate limit please upgrade your account!" (472 calls/30d, all soft-failing). Bruce ruled byok: bring your own CoinDesk Data key. platformKeyEnv was removed from the gateway manifest, so Pipeworx no longer fronts any key for this pack — every tool requires _apiKey and refuses cleanly ({found:false, reason:"missing_api_key", …}) without one. No plan or quota is quoted here because CoinDesk Data's pricing page no longer publishes one without an account — see https://developers.coindesk.com/pricing/.

Without your own key, use the crypto pack (get_crypto_price) for current prices and daily history, or crypto-feeds for crypto news.

Auth

Bring your own CoinDesk Data key: pass it as _apiKey on every call. Free signup at https://developers.coindesk.com/. Pipeworx does not supply a shared key for this pack.

Quick Start

Add to your MCP client (Claude Desktop, Cursor, Windsurf, etc.):

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "cryptocompare": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/cryptocompare/mcp"
    }
  }
}

What this endpoint actually serves

tools/list at https://gateway.pipeworx.io/cryptocompare/mcp returns the tools in the table above plus the shared Pipeworx meta-tools — ask_pipeworx, discover_tools, search_within, remember/recall and the rest of the gateway-wide set. So the tool count you see is larger than this table: a single-pack endpoint currently lists roughly 30 shared tools alongside the pack's own. The connection's initialize response states its exact scope, and is the authoritative answer for a given day.

This is deliberate, not multiplexing by accident. The meta-tools are what let a scoped connection answer a question this pack does not cover — via ask_pipeworx, which routes across the whole catalog — without you adding a second MCP server. There is currently no way to mount a pack endpoint without them; if the extra schemas cost you more context than the routing is worth, connect to the full gateway once rather than to several pack endpoints.

Or connect to the full Pipeworx gateway to get every pack's tools listed directly, instead of just this one's:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "pipeworx": {
      "url": "https://gateway.pipeworx.io/mcp"
    }
  }
}

Both URLs reach the same gateway and the same 1686+ data sources. The only difference is which pack's tools are listed directly; ask_pipeworx reaches all of them from either one.

No MCP client? Call it over HTTP

This pack takes your own API key (_apiKey) — we don't front one for it, so there's no curl here that would run without it. Inspect any tool: GET https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/cryptocompare_price. Find one: POST https://gateway.pipeworx.io/v1/tools/search_packs with {"query":"..."}.

Standalone (no gateway account)

This package also runs as a local stdio MCP server — no Pipeworx account, no gateway round-trip:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "cryptocompare": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@pipeworx/mcp-cryptocompare"]
    }
  }
}

Or run it directly to confirm it starts:

npx -y @pipeworx/mcp-cryptocompare

It speaks MCP over stdin/stdout and answers initialize/tools/list/tools/call for only this pack's tools — none of the shared meta-tools the gateway connection above adds. Same source, same tools, no ask_pipeworx routing.

Using with ask_pipeworx

Instead of calling tools directly, you can ask questions in plain English — this works on the pack endpoint above as well as on the full gateway:

ask_pipeworx({ question: "your question about Cryptocompare data" })

The gateway picks the right tool and fills the arguments automatically.
