Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.8.0

static website generator

Static Site Generator

Installation

$ npm i -S @potato4d/dodai
$ dodai init

Quick Start

$ dodai init

Native ESM

As of 0.8.0, @potato4d/dodai is ESM-only. The library, CLI, and temporary site modules used during builds all run as native ESM.

import { build, dev, init } from '@potato4d/dodai';
import { HotReload } from '@potato4d/dodai/hotreload';

Use these public package entry points instead of importing files from dist.

Migrating from 0.7.x

  • Replace CommonJS require() calls with ESM import statements.
  • Set "type": "module" in the site project's package.json.
  • Use "module": "NodeNext" and "moduleResolution": "NodeNext" in tsconfig.json.
  • Include the emitted .js extension in local TypeScript imports, for example import { value } from './value.js'.

dodai init applies these ESM settings for new projects.

How to Use

Layout

  • src/layouts/default.tsx
import * as React from 'react';

type LayoutProps = { head: JSX.Element | null; children?: React.ReactNode };

export const Layout: React.FC<LayoutProps> = ({ head, children }) => {
  return (
    <html lang="ja">
      <head>
        <meta charSet="utf-8" />
        <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0" />
        {head}
      </head>
      <body>
        {children}
      </body>
    </html>
  )
}

Page

Static Route Page

import React from 'react'

export const Head: React.FC = () => {
  return (
    <>
      <title>static route page</title>
    </>
  )
}

export const Page: React.FC = () => {
  return (
    <div>
      static route page
    </div>
  )
}

Dynamic Route Page

// src/pages/entry/[single].tsx
import React from 'react'

type EntryProps = {
  url: string;
  data: {
    title: string;
    date: string;
    body: string;
  }
}

export const Head: React.FC<EntryProps> = ({ url, data }) => {
  return (
    <>
      <title>{data.title}</title>
    </>
  )
}

export const Page: React.FC<EntryProps> = ({ url, data }) => {
  return (
    <div>
      <h2>{data.title}</h2>
      <time>{data.date}</time>
      <div dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: data.body }} />
    </div>
  )
}

Data

Dynamic route data

// src/data/entry/[single].tsx

type Entry = {
  url: string;
  data: {
    title: string;
    date: string;
    body: string;
  }
}

export const data: Entry[] = [
  {
    url: '/entry/1',
    data: {
      title: 'first entry',
      date: new Date().toISOString(),
      body: '<p>hello</p>'
    }
  }
]

Build

$ env NODE_ENV='production' dodai build

Dev Server

$ dodai dev

Components

HotReload

  • props: { dev?: boolean }
    • dev: default process.env.NODE_ENV !== 'production'
import * as React from 'react';
import { HotReload } from '@potato4d/dodai/hotreload';

type LayoutProps = { head: JSX.Element | null; children?: React.ReactNode };

export const Layout: React.FC<LayoutProps> = ({ head, children }) => {
  return (
    <html lang="ja">
      <head>
        <meta charSet="utf-8" />
        <meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1.0" />
        {head}
        <HotReload />
      </head>
      <body>
        {children}
      </body>
    </html>
  )
}

Development

$ pnpm install --frozen-lockfile
$ pnpm test

The test command builds the native ESM package and runs its package, CLI, site generation, dynamic route, and module-cache integration checks.
