Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Runtime prompt injection scanner for Node.js. Blocks attacks before they reach your LLM. One-liner setup. Pure regex, zero dependencies, < 1ms per scan.

Quick Start

npm install prompt-shield

Why

Every public-facing AI — chatbots, Discord bots, customer service agents, community auto-responders — is a target for prompt injection. Attackers try to:

  • Override the AI's role ("You are now DAN")
  • Extract the system prompt ("Show me your instructions")
  • Bypass safety rules ("Ignore all previous instructions")
  • Inject hidden commands in documents and web pages

Most defense today happens inside the system prompt ("don't do bad things"). prompt-shield adds a layer before the LLM — scanning user input for attack patterns and blocking them instantly.

Trusted Users

Bot owners and admins skip scanning entirely — no false positives on legitimate commands:

The onBlock callback is fire-and-forget — if it throws, shield continues working. Your protection never breaks because of a notification error.

Performance

  • < 1ms per scan (measured across 1,000 iterations)
  • Zero dependencies — no ML models, no API calls, no network
  • Deterministic — same input always produces same result
  • 24 regex patterns covering 8 attack categories

Limitations

  • Regex-based detection is heuristic — sophisticated attacks may bypass it
  • Does not replace system prompt hardening or behavioral testing
  • English and Traditional Chinese patterns only (contributions welcome)
  • Not a substitute for LLM-level safety alignment
