Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Fast, RFC 6265 compliant HTTP cookie parser and serializer with Set-Cookie attribute support.

npm version npm downloads License: MIT TypeScript

@prexjs/cookie is a high-performance TypeScript library for parsing and serializing HTTP Cookie and Set-Cookie headers according to RFC 6265 and modern draft extensions (SameSite, Priority, Partitioned).

Features

  • Parse HTTP Cookie header strings into simple key-value dictionaries.
  • Parse and serialize Set-Cookie headers with all standard attributes: Max-Age, Expires, Domain, Path, HttpOnly, Secure, SameSite, Partitioned, and Priority.
  • High-performance scanning with no regex overhead during delimiter parsing.
  • Backward-compatible serialize(name, val, options) helper.
  • Dual ES Module (.mjs) and CommonJS (.cjs) support with TypeScript definitions.
  • Zero runtime dependencies.

Installation

Install using your preferred package manager:

# npm
npm install @prexjs/cookie

# pnpm
pnpm add @prexjs/cookie

# Yarn
yarn add @prexjs/cookie

# Bun
bun add @prexjs/cookie

Quick start

import cookie, { parse, serialize } from '@prexjs/cookie';
import http from 'node:http';

const server = http.createServer((req, res) => {
  // Parse incoming Cookie header
  const cookies = cookie.parse(req.headers.cookie || '');
  console.log(cookies.sessionId);

  // Set a new cookie
  res.setHeader(
    'Set-Cookie',
    cookie.serialize('sessionId', 'abc123xyz', {
      httpOnly: true,
      secure: true,
      sameSite: 'lax',
      maxAge: 3600, // 1 hour
    }),
  );

  res.end('Authenticated');
});

Both default and named exports are supported:

import cookie, {
  parse,
  serialize,
  parseCookie,
  stringifyCookie,
  parseSetCookie,
  stringifySetCookie,
  type Cookies,
  type SetCookie,
  type ParseOptions,
  type StringifyOptions,
  type SerializeOptions,
} from '@prexjs/cookie';

Examples

Parsing request cookies

import { parse } from '@prexjs/cookie';

const cookies = parse('foo=bar; equation=E%3Dmc%5E2');
console.log(cookies);
// { foo: 'bar', equation: 'E=mc^2' }

Serializing Set-Cookie with attributes

import { serialize } from '@prexjs/cookie';

const setCookie = serialize('session', 'secret-token', {
  domain: 'example.com',
  path: '/',
  httpOnly: true,
  secure: true,
  sameSite: 'strict',
  priority: 'high',
  partitioned: true,
});

Parsing Set-Cookie header string

import { parseSetCookie } from '@prexjs/cookie';

const parsed = parseSetCookie('id=a3fWa; Expires=Wed, 21 Oct 2026 07:28:00 GMT; Secure; HttpOnly; SameSite=Lax');
console.log(parsed.name);     // 'id'
console.log(parsed.value);    // 'a3fWa'
console.log(parsed.httpOnly); // true
console.log(parsed.sameSite); // 'lax'

Compatibility

@prexjs/cookie is designed for JavaScript and TypeScript projects. It is distributed with ES Modules (.mjs), CommonJS (.cjs), and TypeScript declarations. It runs in any modern JavaScript runtime (Node.js, Deno, Bun, browser) without external dependencies.
