Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@principal-ai/storybook-addon-otel

Storybook addon for forwarding OpenTelemetry traces to an OTLP HTTP endpoint.

Features

  • Simple forwarding of existing OpenTelemetry instrumentation to OTLP collector
  • Configurable via Storybook parameters
  • Minimal toolbar status indicator
  • Support for per-story configuration overrides
  • Zero component changes required

Installation

npm install --save-dev @principal-ai/storybook-addon-otel
# or
yarn add -D @principal-ai/storybook-addon-otel
# or
bun add -D @principal-ai/storybook-addon-otel

Setup

1. Add to Storybook addons

In .storybook/main.ts:

import type { StorybookConfig } from '@storybook/react-vite';

const config: StorybookConfig = {
  addons: [
    // ... other addons
    '@principal-ai/storybook-addon-otel',
  ],
  // ... rest of config
};

export default config;

2. Configure in preview

In .storybook/preview.ts:

import type { Preview } from '@storybook/react';
import type { OtelExportConfig } from '@principal-ai/storybook-addon-otel';

const preview: Preview = {
  parameters: {
    otelExport: {
      enabled: true,
      endpoint: 'http://localhost:4318/v1/traces',
      serviceName: 'storybook',
      resourceAttributes: {
        'environment': 'development',
      },
    } as OtelExportConfig,
  },
};

export default preview;

Configuration Options

interface OtelExportConfig {
  enabled?: boolean;                    // Default: false
  endpoint?: string;                    // Default: 'http://localhost:4318/v1/traces'
  serviceName?: string;                 // Default: 'storybook'
  resourceAttributes?: Record<string, string | number | boolean>;
  headers?: Record<string, string>;     // Custom headers (e.g., auth)
  timeoutMillis?: number;              // Default: 10000
  maxQueueSize?: number;               // Default: 2048
  maxExportBatchSize?: number;         // Default: 512
  scheduledDelayMillis?: number;       // Default: 5000
}

Per-Story Configuration

Override configuration for specific stories:

export default {
  title: 'My Story',
  component: MyComponent,
  parameters: {
    otelExport: {
      serviceName: 'my-specific-service',
      resourceAttributes: {
        'story.name': 'MyComponent',
      },
    },
  },
};

Toolbar Status Indicator

The addon adds a toolbar button showing:

  • Green dot: Export active and working
  • Gray dot: Export disabled
  • Red dot: Initialization error

Hover over the button for detailed status information.

Requirements

How It Works

  1. The addon initializes the OpenTelemetry Web SDK in Storybook's preview iframe
  2. It registers a global WebTracerProvider with an OTLP HTTP exporter
  3. Components that use @opentelemetry/api automatically send traces through the registered provider
  4. Traces are batched and sent to the configured OTLP endpoint
  5. The toolbar indicator shows real-time connection status
