Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Scribe

Persistent, fully-typed, automatically-replicated player data for Roblox Luau and roblox-ts, built on ProfileStore.

📖 Full documentation → ericplane.github.io/Scribe 🔌 Studio plugin → Scribe Studio

# wally.toml
[dependencies]
Scribe = "ericplane/[email protected]"

roblox-ts support is prepared as @rbxts/scribe, with inferred schema and API types over the same Luau runtime. npm publication requires the initial registry setup; see the roblox-ts guide for installation and examples.

  • Fully typed. A type-solver-generated accessor tree types your data end to end (data.Coins.Increment(50), nested containers, arrays, and datatype fields), checked at compile time.
  • Schemas all the way down. Scribe.ArrayOf and Scribe.DictOf give array and dictionary entries a schema, so data.Plots[1].Origin is a typed CFrame that packs to 13 bytes, with per-element bounds and size caps.
  • Replication for free. Schema-compressed batched diffs stream to clients over a pluggable transport, and you read the same data on the client with the same API, with no RemoteEvents to wire up.
  • Production-grade. Migrations, a wipe guard, version history, GDPR export and erase, leaderboards, gifting and perks, and fail-closed monetization all sit on top of ProfileStore's session locking.

[!IMPORTANT] The typed API needs the new Luau type solver (Studio: select Workspace and set UseNewLuauTypeSolver to Enabled; or enable it in your Luau LSP settings). Scribe runs correctly without it. Data.Raw is the untyped escape hatch.

Quick start

One shared ModuleScript declares the template and returns { Server, Client }. This example uses Mock mode, so it starts fresh and does not touch saved player data. The step-by-step tutorial includes installation, the Studio folder structure, and how to test real saving.

-- ReplicatedStorage/Shared/Data.luau
local Scribe = require(game:GetService("ReplicatedStorage").Packages.Scribe)

return Scribe({
    Template = { Coins = 0, Settings = { Music = true } },
    ProfileStoreIndex = "PlayerData", -- required: your DataStore name
    ProfileKeyPrefix = "PLAYER_", -- required: per-player key prefix
    Mode = "Mock", -- learning mode; resets between server runs
})
-- Script in ServerScriptService: wait for data, then change a field
local Data = require(game:GetService("ReplicatedStorage").Shared.Data).Server

game:GetService("Players").PlayerAdded:Connect(function(player)
    local data = Data.WaitForData(player) -- yields until Ready (default 60s timeout)
    if data then
        data.Coins.Increment(50)
    end
end)
-- LocalScript in StarterPlayer/StarterPlayerScripts
local Data = require(game:GetService("ReplicatedStorage").Shared.Data).Client

Data.Coins.Observe(function(coins)
    print("Coins:", coins) -- replace with your UI update once this works
end)

For declarators, replication + visibility, monetization, leaderboards, migrations, diagnostics, and the full API, see the documentation.

Optional add-ons live in addons/: copy-in UI bridges for Vide, React and Fusion; ScribeTelemetry, which posts Scribe's health, failures and summaries to Discord webhooks; and ScribeLeaderstats, which keeps Roblox's player list synced with selected data paths.

For roblox-ts, each addon is a separate optional package: @rbxts/scribe-react, @rbxts/scribe-vide, @rbxts/scribe-fusion, @rbxts/scribe-telemetry, and @rbxts/scribe-leaderstats. The core package includes no addons or UI dependencies.

Development

Package builds and npm test also need Python 3.10+. See release packaging for staged sources and the source-line maps included with published packages.

rokit install              # wally + rojo + selene + luau-lsp + lune + stylua toolchain
wally install              # dependencies
selene src test lune addons # lint
stylua --check src test lune addons # formatting (drop --check to apply)
lune run lune/run-tests # run the test suite (headless, ~2s)
npm ci # install pinned roblox-ts development tools
npm test # check declarations, packages, and compiled Luau consumers

The same lint, format, test, and type-check (luau-lsp) checks run in CI on every pull request (.github/workflows/ci.yml), and releases are gated on a green run. Mark the test, lint, format, analyze, roblox-ts, and version-check checks as required in the repository's branch-protection settings to enforce them on merge.

Docs are built with Astro Starlight from the doc-comments in src/ and the guides in docgen/guides/. The site lives in docs-site/; see docgen/README.md for preview and check commands.
