Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@referalli/express

Referalli middleware for Express 4 and 5, and for any Node http handler that takes (req, res, next):

  • Webhook signature verification that handles the raw body for you
  • First-party referral attribution cookies
npm install @referalli/express referalli

Webhooks

import express from 'express';
import { referalliWebhook } from '@referalli/express';

const app = express();

// Mount it before express.json(), or after express.raw() on this route.
app.post('/webhooks/referalli', referalliWebhook({ secret: process.env.REFERALLI_WEBHOOK_SECRET! }), (req, res) => {
  const event = req.referalliEvent!; // typed; also in req.body
  if (event.topic === 'commission.earned') {
    /* ... */
  }
  res.json({ received: true });
});

app.use(express.json());

The middleware verifies the exact bytes Referalli signed. It reads them from the request stream, from the output of express.raw(), or from a req.rawBody your parser kept. If the body was already parsed, it raises a clear error instead. It answers 400 with a reason (missing_headers, timestamp or signature) when verification fails. Options: secret (pass an array while rotating), toleranceSec (default 300) and limit (default 1 MB).

Attribution

import { Referalli } from 'referalli';
import { attributeSignup, referalliAttribution } from '@referalli/express';

const referalli = new Referalli(); // REFERALLI_API_KEY

app.use(referalliAttribution({ cookieDomain: '.example.com' }));

app.get('/', (req, res) => res.send(req.referral?.code ? 'Welcome, friend of a partner!' : 'Welcome'));

app.post('/signup', async (req, res) => {
  const user = await createUser(req.body);
  await attributeSignup(req, { client: referalli, programId: 'prg_...', customerRef: user.id, email: user.email });
  res.json(user);
});

If a request URL carries ?via=, ?ref=, ?aff= or ref_click_id, referalliAttribution() sets the referral cookie. The cookie is the same first-party one the browser tracker uses. Every request gets req.referral. If you pass publishableKey, the middleware also records the landing on the server. attributeSignup calls associate with the idempotency key signup:<customerRef> and never throws.
