Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

OpenAI streaming transport for @richkitjs/extension-ai

Readme

@richkitjs/ai-openai

OpenAI transport for @richkitjs/extension-ai. Streams the chat-completions SSE response into the editor, one text delta at a time.

Zero runtime dependencies — it speaks the wire format over fetch, so a proxy route only has to pipe OpenAI's response through unchanged.

Install

pnpm add @richkitjs/extension-ai @richkitjs/ai-openai

Usage

import { AI } from '@richkitjs/extension-ai'
import { openaiComplete } from '@richkitjs/ai-openai'
import { StarterKit } from '@richkitjs/starter-kit'

const editor = new Editor({
  element: document.querySelector('#editor')!,
  extensions: [
    StarterKit,
    AI.configure({
      complete: openaiComplete({ endpoint: '/api/ai' }),
    }),
  ],
})

Your /api/ai route holds the key and pipes OpenAI's SSE body straight back:

export async function POST(request: Request) {
  const upstream = await fetch('https://api.openai.com/v1/chat/completions', {
    method: 'POST',
    headers: {
      'content-type': 'application/json',
      authorization: `Bearer ${process.env.OPENAI_API_KEY}`,
    },
    body: await request.text(),
  })
  return new Response(upstream.body, { status: upstream.status })
}

Options

| Option | Type | Default | Description | | -------------------------- | ------------------------ | ------------------ | --------------------------------------------------------- | | endpoint | string | — | Your server route, which holds the API key. | | dangerouslyBrowserApiKey | string | — | Calls api.openai.com directly with this key. See below. | | model | string | 'gpt-4o' | Model id. | | systemPrompt | string | built-in | Overrides the built-in editing instructions. | | headers | Record<string, string> | {} | Extra headers, e.g. auth for your own endpoint. | | fetch | typeof fetch | globalThis.fetch | Injectable for tests. |

Exactly one of endpoint or dangerouslyBrowserApiKey is required; passing both throws.

About dangerouslyBrowserApiKey

Warning: this sends the key from the browser. It is only correct when the key belongs to the person sitting in front of that browser — e.g. they pasted it into a settings panel.

Never wire it to a build-time env var (VITE_*, NEXT_PUBLIC_*). Bundlers inline those, so your key ships to every visitor in readable JavaScript.

For anything user-facing, use endpoint.

Errors

Non-2xx responses, missing bodies, and mid-stream failures are thrown, and @richkitjs/extension-ai reports them in its plugin state:

import { getAIState } from '@richkitjs/extension-ai'

const { status, error } = getAIState(editor.state)! // status: 'error'
